sponsor a Muslim gymnast

Breaking. Alan Owen is trying to launch a charity where people can sponsor gymnasts in developing nations for about $35 a month.

Nations include Peru, Nicaragua, Chile and Honduras.

I’m hoping it will include Islamic nations, as well.

Opportunities for girls to do gymnastics in Muslim nations are limited. Surprisingly, there are at least two sports centers in Kabul, Afghanistan offering the sport and activity for girls.

That program is sponsored by the Alzahra Cultural and Sport Association. They could use help.

related – Malaysian gymnast Farah Ann Abdul Had was a star at the SEA Games. Predictably some Muslims criticized her for wearing a leotard.

Personally, I feel female gymnasts should be allowed to wear bike shorts over their leotards, if they prefer. Does FIG already allow leotards with built-in shorts?

European Games format

For the first time in the same competition, our six disciplines, four Olympic (MAG, WAG, RG, TRA) and two non-Olympic disciplines (AER, ACRO) are gathered.

All finales will take place according to the principle of an alternation between two disciplines. Men’s artistic gymnastics with women’s artistic gymnastics, rhythmic (Olympic) with acrobatic (non-Olympic), trampoline (Olympic) with Aerobic (non-Olympic). …

… artistic, with an all-around final with 18 gymnasts instead of 24 and the apparatus finals with 6 instead of 8 gymnasts. …

UEG.org

The main booster of the European Games format is Georges Guelzec, President of the European Union of Gymnastics. He’s running to succeed Bruno Grandi as the next FIG President.

Jake Dalton – tap swing

Great drill by a great gymnast. Jake was demonstrating for coach Dave Juszczyk.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Don’t expect your beginners to swing like Jake. Older, taller gymnasts with long limbs have a biomechanical advantage. It’s easier to snap a longer whip than a shorter one.

Be patient with your shortest, youngest kids. Swing technique takes time.

Kids in Action Gymnastics

I dropped in to see coach Leonard Isaacs at his new club in Lake Barrington outside Chicago.

Owner Gary Griffin brought Leonard in to KIAGA – a gorgeous, clean 23,000 square foot facility only 3 years old.

Gary Leonard

Leonard Isaacs and Bill Sands were the first Elite American coaches I ever followed. They coached together in Chicago a … few years ago. 🙂

Both are still two of the gurus that influence me most as a coach.

Leonard is an advisor and consultant to Tumbl Trak, coming up with new innovations to make Gymnastics training safer. This time he showed me a series of non-spotting progressions for teaching high to low “Bail” handstand on Bars. That video will be released soon.

Here’s a background article on Kids in Action – KIAGA’s Coach Gary.
