Pan American Games Subdivision II

Pan American Games Subdivision III (Canada, Brazil)

Ana Gomez Porraz 57.200 – 4 routines

Ana had a fantastic day at Pan Am prelims. She’s got very good difficulty. And hit.

1. Amelia Hundley – USA 57.650 Q
2. Madison Desch – USA 57.300 Q
3. Ana Sofia Gomez – Guatemala 57.200 Q

Guatamala has a population of about 16 million. Per capita income $5,208 / year.

How many Gymnastics clubs?

Yes it’s silly that a competition exists where Guatamala competes mano a mano with the USA. But you’ve got to respect what Ana and her coaches – Adrian Boboc & Elena Boboc – have to do to compete with the richer more populous Pan Am nations.

She was 22nd AA at the London Olympics.

Rachel Gowey – Bars

This routine was a big, happy surprise for me. Interesting and well done. She’s confident enough to do it with no coach standing in.

Respect to Chow.

South Carolina can bid for NCAA Championships

It’s only a flag. It’s only one flag. But we should celebrate the symbolism of South Carolina taking down a Confederate flag. For some, not all, that flag represents an evil slave society. For some, not all, it’s a symbol of racism.

The NCAA felt that way, for example.

Ellie Black – single leg squat

Can YOU do a front somersault to single leg squat?

It reminded some of Chellsie Memmel at 2006 Worlds.

Ellie had a bad day in prelims. Happily she still qualified for the AA Final. Without the pressure of needing to hit for the Team she’ll be even more aggressive in the Finals.

USA, Canada, Brazil

1. USA: 173.80
2. Canada: 166.50
3. Brazil: 165.40

Leaders of the AA qualification:

1. Amelia Hundley USA 57.650 Q
2. Madison Desch USA 57.300 Q
3. Ana Sofia Gomez Guatemala 57.200 Q

This venue has been raucous for both WAG and MAG prelims. These home town favourites were excited to collect a silver medal.

Judging was lenient, at times, I thought. That often happens in competitions where strong and populous nations compete against smaller countries.

Gym Blog Brazil notes that this team, even without injured superstar Rebecca Andrade, was β€œbetter and better prepared than it was in Guadalajara in 2011”.

Brazil easily could have finished ahead of Canada. I’d say both nations have a chance of finishing top 8 at Worlds 2015. What I’m saying is … Don’t write off Brazil qualifying a full team to Rio. I’d love to see 30yr-old Daniele HypΓ³lito compete her 5th Olympics. πŸ™‚

Jessica Lopez – 14.3 Bars

J Lo could potentially have won this competition. But due to injury she’s not competing the AA.

Yamilet Pena – Vault

Of the 3 international gymnasts who have competed this vault in recent years, Yamilet is the most powerful. And the best. This time her feet legitimately hit first.
