Nathan Gafuik has worked as hard for as long as any gymnast I can recall. It’s great to see him put it together in such a big meet.
After putting Canada on the board on Monday thanks to a third-place finish in the individual all-around competition, Nathan Gafuik struck again on Tuesday with a silver medal at the vault on the final day of artistic gymnastics action at the 26th Summer Universiade.
… Ksenia Afanasyeva is looking to be a lock yet again with those strong scores across the board. Her many fans will get another chance to see if she can get past the psychological issues that seem to dog her at every final. It would be nice see her return from Tokyo with an individual medal this time.
* Note that USAG rules have a few bonus tenths. For example, 0.1+ for a stuck landing of elements D or more difficult. (Leyva’s HBar had +0.5 bonus this night.)
… “I need some more to reach [Kohei] Uchimura, but that’s what I’m working on,” he said.
Alvarez was not surprised by Leyva’s effort on day one. He says he always hits his routines at their Miami gym, where they do extra on pommel horse, a weakness of the U.S. team. He also wrote down his potential score on paper and showed it to Danell a while ago, but Danell thought the lofty number was crazy.

Couch Gymnast, inspired by the latest gymnastics documentary out of the U.K. called The Gymnast, reflects historical:
… The British have always been good at bringing the World a gymnastics documentary. For a country who was only recently climbed the ranks they have had quite a fascination with their gymnasts and the worlds they inhabit. This should not be that surprising. Consider the nineties, when the USA finally became a real power in gymnastics, there was a spate of documentaries coming from that proud nation.
The British have kept them coming for years however, and they are generally of good quality with interesting insights on the lives of those involved in the sport. …
