Ghent World Cup

I’m surprised to see such a strong line-up competing the FIG Artistic Gymnastics Challenge Cup Ghent including:

Marco Baldauf (AUT), Diego Hypolito, Jade Barbosaet, Diana dos Santos (BRA), Zou Kai and Wu Liufang (CHN), Tomi Tuuha (FIN), Vlasos Maras (GRE), Kirsztian Berki (HUN), Dutch trio van Gelder, Wammes, Zonderland, Diana Anton Golotsukov (RUS), Regulo Carmona (VEN). …

Rumour is that Olympic Floor champion Zou Kai has a HUGE Floor difficulty start score.

Jiang Yuyuan is there, too, perhaps to prove herself ready for Tokyo.

Prize money of 25,000 CHF makes the event appealing. But we can already predict that somebody will be injured, forcing them to miss World Championships.

Mackenzie Caquatto: NCAA and Worlds

Canadian Kristina Vaculik took a year off school at Stanford to try for Worlds and Olympics. She qualified for Worlds Tokyo this past weekend.

But Mackenzie Caquatto is trying to do both Collegiate gymnastics and National Team, simultaneously:

… Caquatto and other members of the U.S. National Team will compete for a spot on the world team. The group meets in Houston once a month to work with Martha Karolyi, the team’s coordinator since 2001, in preparation for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

That’s why Caquatto will keep such an insane schedule the next several months. And we haven’t even mentioned she is planning to compete for the Gators once the NCAA season starts in January. …

“She really has her mind set and we are going to do everything we can to help her achieve this goal,’’ (coach) Faehn said. “It’s very rare. There have been some athletes who have come back after college and have done it, but while trying to tackle a full [class] load and do this, it’s very rare and extremely challenging.

“I really think she can stay disciplined and focused and give it a shot.’’ …

Gators gymnast Caquatto is keeping a busy schedule as she attempts a rare challenge

I’m not liking her chances. Marta will want total focus on Tokyo and the Olympics.

Florida has a gorgeous new Player Bios section, by the way.

Adidas by Phillip Boy

On GymNiceTic I saw the news that our Worlds Silver medalist from 2010 has his own line of Adidas garb.

The German male gymnasts seem to be doing alright, even if nobody seems to be able to market the American MAGs.

… Check the many comments on that link. Or the same discussion on Tony Retrosi’s Gymnastike post – The Marketing of Men’s Gymnastics

To help the MAG cause, I voted for Leyva over Wieber and Ohashi on the next Inside Gymnastics magazine cover.

ski jump to Air Bag

CALGARY — Big air, soft landing.

Freestyle skiers and snowboarders rocketing off a jump into an enormous air bag Monday at Canada Olympic Park compared it to jumping into a giant marshmallow. …

The behemoth landing cushion — 17 metres long and 11 metres wide — is the first one in Alberta and one of the few air bags in Canada. …

… The International Olympic Committee recently added freestyle and snowboard slopestyle, as well as women’s ski halfpipe to its Winter Games menu.

CFSA Chief Operating Officer Peter Judge estimates there’s between six and a dozen air bags operating in the country …
