gymnast Tomas Gonzalez documentary

Enrique Tomás González Sepúlveda is a Chilean gymnast, the first in his country to win medals at the Pan American Games and World Cup events.

Here is the start of a documentary created by Thomas’s sister Marcela. It’s all part of a project to help Tomas qualify for the Olympics, something he’ll try to do at the Olympic Test Meet, January 2012 in London. (I’m not sure how, still confused by the FIG rules.)

He’s mustachioed for Movember, as you can see. 🙂

Cirque du Soliel, Tokyo closing

It seems Cirque keeps opening shows, but never closing any. They are closing Tokyo Disney, I’m sad to say. 😦

… Since its opening on 1 October 2008, Cirque du Soleil “ZED” has continued with encouraging audience support. But as of Saturday, 31 December 2011, the production will come to an end.

official announcement

Click PLAY or watch the trailer on YouTube.

I saw the excellent show after Worlds. And went backstage. Many are disappointed and upset to be winding down. It’s definitely one of the most popular shows within the company.

Some acts are being moved to existing shows. (I heard the excellent double trapeze troupe is going to Mystere.)

… Part of the problem was the 2011 earthquake and tsunami. The show was black March 11 through April 20th. Special netting was brought in to protect artists in case of aftershocks during performance.

Zed was the first show to reach its one-millionth guest faster than any show in Japan, and did see great success with over 1,000 performances …

In fact, ticket sales boomed … right after the announced closing.

remembering Andrea Bailes

… Andrea was involved in a car accident on Friday the 18th of November, 2011. The accident took her life. …

Read a tribute posted by Matt Brinker, Head Coach at Southern Ohio Gymnastics Academy.

Dory Roettker, Matt and everyone at the club miss her terribly.

… A young gymnast in Namibia was also killed recently in a car accident. I feel the most dangerous aspect of being a gymnast is the motor vehicle commute to and from the gym. 😦

MAG Chinese Championships Finals

Results day 1 via GymChina: News on Facebook.

They credit piibunia.

The MAG competition was far stronger than the WAG. And deeper.

With the National team absent, they still had 90+ strong gymnasts competing. And I was told there are perhaps another 150 seniors training who did not qualify.

China is far deeper than Japan, by comparison. Deeper even than USA.

Their B and C teams could contend for Olympic team medals.

last day Chinese Championships

It’s the final day of competition in Hong Kong … and I’m over in Macao. 😦

The best place to follow what’s happening is Chinese Gymnastics Blog.

Here are WAG medalists from Finals day 1:

Luo Peiru 14.925(6.6)
Huang Huidan 14.65(6.6)
Xiao Kangjun 14.225(6.5)

The 2011 Chinese Individual champion on Bars has a very good release that’s not a Jaeger and a strong dismount, setting her apart from most other competitors.

6.6 + 8.325 = 14.925 1st
