Cal beats #1 Stanford

The No. 5 California men’s gymnastics team opened its 2011 campaign with not just a 349-650-348.700 win but a victory over rival and No. 1-ranked Stanford. …

Junior Glen Ishino handily won the all-around with a 90.300 while Stanford’s Tim Gentry took second with an 87.450. …

No. 5 Cal Upends No. 1 Stanford, 349.650-348.700

Parallel Bars and Pommels were the difference, traditionally strong apparatus for Berkeley under former coach Weiner.

Most years Cal is my favourite team.

I’m impressed with this gutsy performance. The guys are trying to prove themselves to those who want to cancel the program next year.

… On the other hand, I don’t see any improvement in the quality of online meet reporting from last season. The guys are far, far inferior to the women’s Collegiate when it comes to promoting themselves.

Somebody needs to step up and make more photos and videos available immediately from the Men’s NCAA meets. This post is pretty dull without it.

Yet another Achilles injury. This time on a “simple somersault”.

He’s had Achilles pain for a long time, typical early warning. Fabian is age-23.

He has plenty of time to recover for the Olympics. But landings will still be difficult in time for Worlds 2011.

gymnast Michelle Stout – Achilles tear

NCAA Sports has a feature on Arkansas star Michelle Stout:

… Following a fourth-place finish in the all-around at NCAA Championships in 2009, Stout was ready to finish her stellar career with a flourish and make her senior season one to remember. The season was memorable alright, but not for the reasons Stout thought it would be. Instead, she suffered a season-ending Achilles’ tendon tear during the 2010 preseason and spent the year recovering.

“It was definitely pretty devastating at first,” Stout said. “I didn’t know if I was going to be able to come back. …

The story makes reference to the recent Achilles tears by Georgia’s Kaylan Earls and UCLA’s Vanessa Zamarripa.

It’s very common in older powerful gymnasts.

I’m not sure there’s any way we’re going to reduce the number of Achilles injuries, short of competing only on TumblTrak.

Florida kills, UCLA tanks

The No. 1 University of Florida gymnastics team … Friday evening with a 196.775-192.90 win over No. 16 Kentucky … in front of Stephen C. O’Connell Center crowd of 4,552.

Gator Zone

Chomp. This team is really rolling. And look at the depth:

… Tonight’s meet saw four Gators making their season or career debuts in event lineups as the Florida coaching staff looks to see how the gymnasts perform in a competitive situation. UF Head Coach Rhonda Faehn liked what she saw Friday.

“We’re extremely pleased once again with how the team did, especially with so many different lineups that we added and new routines. Some different athletes got an opportunity to get out there tonight,” Faehn said. “I think the vault and bar performances were stellar. …

UCLA put up some new routines too, … and lost to Southern Utah. (194.750 to 194.425)

Nobody aside from Head Coach Scott Bauman thought that defeating the defending champions was remotely possible.
