Kimmy Fasani – first 2/1 back snowboard

Apparently she’s the first woman to do one. That surprises me. Guys have been doing them for decades.

Jake Dalton wins Winter Cup

The University of Oklahoma star took prelims with 88.10.

And proved himself in Finals winning the AA, Floor and Vault.

CONGRATS.

OU sophomore Jacob Dalton won the 2011 Winter Cup all-around title and regained his position on the U.S. Senior National Team late Saturday night.

Stanford scores 197.000

Almost. … 196.975.

vs San Jose State (season high 193.825)

I still recall Thomasina Wallace and SJSU upsetting Stanford in 2009. … That didn’t happen tonight. Stanford will maintain their #2 ranking in the nation.

The No. 2 Stanford women’s gymnastics team hit five scores of 9.90 or above on the way to a season-best performance in a 196.975-193.825 victory over San Jose State at Burnham Pavilion on Saturday. …

Stanford improved to 9-0 overall this season and 44-1-1 at Burnham Pavilion since 1998.

The Cardinal next takes on Pac-10 rivals UCLA and Oregon State at the IGI Chicago Style Invitational on Friday at Chicago’s Navy Pier, and then heads to Ann Arbor, Mich., for a tri-meet with Michigan and Nebraska on Sunday.

Go Stanford

U of Michigan 196.800

Wow.

I never give this team the respect they deserve. That away score at New Hampshire puts them in the league with the top teams … chasing Florida.

Kylee Botterman scored 39.575 to win the all-around. Again.

GoBlue.

U of Washington Huskies scored their best team score of the season, 195.800. They should move up in the rankings, as will Michigan.

Youna Dufournet to Europeans

Good news.

It sounds like rehabilitation is going well and we’ll see the intriguing French gymnast in Berlin.

… “the Games is the goal,” Youna Dufournet … “all in good time,” she hastened to say.

Prior to London, Tokyo and there are world championships. This will be in October. And even before that, there will be Berlin and the European Championships in early April. …

best routines Winter Cup day 1

Andy Thornton has been pouring over the videos posted by USAG, linking to the best of the best.

Team USA needs pommels desperately, especially since Sasha Artemov is not back in shape, as yet.

Glen Ishino from Cal Berkeley (3rd AA PDF) has a good shot to make National Team, especially with a 14.90 on horse.

… That had to be the best Liukin (full twisting laid out Tcatchev) I’ve ever seen, and nearly every skill he did had a unique style to it. Great body position on his releases, and great form throughout the routine. Same D-score as Leyva (7.4), but amazingly this scored 0.2 lower in execution than Leyva’s! …

Danell is awesome talented, but he really does need to improve his execution.

His tumbling is quite stylish. The connections as embarrassing as every other top guy these days under the Grandi code.

Artistic gymnastics … right. 🙂

do orthotics work?

My old biomechanics professor, Benno M. Nigg at the University of Calgary, says … not necessarily:

His overall conclusion: Shoe inserts or orthotics may be helpful as a short-term solution, preventing injuries in some athletes. But it is not clear how to make inserts that work. The idea that they are supposed to correct mechanical-alignment problems does not hold up. …

NY Times – Close Look at Orthotics Raises a Welter of Doubts

He’s about to release a new book titled Biomechanics of Sport Shoes.

Of course many people swear by them, including this guy.
