… Once every four years since Russian pixie gymnast, Olga Korbut first captured the hearts and minds of America’s future gymnasts and their parents, there has been a surge of new gymnasts pouring into gymnastics facilities in the days, weeks and months after gymnastics is highlighted in the Summer Olympics on TV.

This has been a quadrennial boon to the sport at all levels and has fueled the growth of the sport at the beginner and team levels for years. On average, there has been a 25% – 37% increase in gym student enrollment in each of the Olympic years, after the television coverage lasting for months afterwards.

In years when there is an American gymnastics heroine (e.g., Mary Lou Retton) or a young international gymnast that captures the heart of the whole world (e.g., Nadia Comanechi) the number of new enrollees is at its highest. ….

After the Beijing Olympics many clubs reported NOT seeing an Olympic membership surge. I speculated that some markets are now “saturated”. That all the kids in a city who might have wanted to try gymnastics, already had.

I visited the country in 1998, stopping by the National Team Gymnastics Training Centre. There is no nation whackier than Myanmar … aside from North Korea.

They don’t seem to have a website yet. That doesn’t look good for organizers. …

Tug-of-War is a sport — really? — expected to be added for those Games.

Today I heard a rumour that Artistic Gymnastics might be dropped. I highly doubt that organizers will be allowed to drop a popular Olympic sport and add Tug-of-War. Best case scenario — the Games will be moved. I have no faith in Myanmar.

… Jamie Atkin, the club manager and head coach at Airdrie Edge, was honoured … as Gymnastics Canada’s 2010 Coach of the Year in Tumbling and Trampoline (T&T).

Atkin, who is coach to (two time) world champion and recently crowned Gymnastics Canada’s 2010 T&T Athlete of the Year Corissa Boychuk, was modest when asked about the honour.

“That’s really Corissa’s accomplishment and I’m just along for the ride,” Atkin said. …

Gymnasts include Olga Strazheva (’88 Olympian and ’89 AA Bronze medalist), ’81 World Champion Olga Bicherova, ’87 World Silver medalist Elena Gurova, ’88 Olympic Gold medalist Elena Shevchenko, and Aleftina Priakhina (’87 Worlds alternate and queen of the full twisting everything)

V- Yurchenko full on full twisting tsuk off
UB- Full twist back handspring mount, full in dismount
BB – Full twist back handspring to back hip circle mount, standing full, gainer rulfova, full in dismount
FX – Double double mount, 1 1/2 to double back, full in dismount

Hard to believe this was 25 years ago. 2 full in dismounts off beam (Gurova and Shevchenko) and 2 double double mounts on floor (Priakhina and a girl I can’t identify) and 3 full in dismounts (Shevchenko, Priakhina, and Gurova).
