why is China so weak on H Bar?

Who was the last GREAT Chinese gymnast on Horizontal Bar.

Tong Fei?

Their first two competitors in prelims had weak routines, well done.

But I’m thinking Zhang Chenglong has shown the BEST FORM of any competitor with a highish start score here in Rotterdam.

Here’s a routine from 2009 very similar to what he did in prelims here.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Not a superb set. But at least he can keep his feet together on Rybalko.

Canadian gymnastics competitions …

Date changes for 2 major events:

March 18-20th, 2011 – KYLE SHEWFELT FESTIVAL OF GYMNASTICS, University of Calgary

March 24-27, 2011 – WILD ROSE, Edmonton

Both will be great. They’ve gone back-to-back weekends to accommodate groups that want to do both events.

China gymnasts take the Floor

I’m expecting gymnastics salvation here at the World Gymnastics Championships.

High start scores. AND beautiful execution. (… Day 1 was too much like “College Gymnastics” for me. Hacky.)

Inside Gymnastics has a nice overview of Day 1:

Highlight of the Day – VAULT

Gripe of the Day – fist pump at the end of the routine

Favorite Performances of the Day – Spirited U.S. Effort

THE INSIDE SCOOP: OUR TAKE ON MEN’S QUALIFICATION DAY 1

Teams that hit GREAT: #1 GBR, #2 USA, #3 … Canada, perhaps

GAGE Gymnastics closed

The rumours were true.

Stunned parents discovered Monday that Al Fong has closed his Blue Springs gymnastic center and all of the equipment is gone. A dispute between Fong and his landlord led to his decision.

Fong has operated the Great American Gymnastic Express (GAGE) Center in Blue Springs for 32 years. Terin Humphrey and Courtney McCool trained at the center and went onto to win silver medals for the U.S. in the 2004 Olympics in Athens.

Fong told KMBC’s Michele Rooney that he hopes to relocate soon and get refunds to the parents …

Thanks TCO.

end day 1 Men’s Gymnastics

World Championships Rotterdam.

Highlights:

• Uchimura in the all-around.
• Sellathurai on Pommel
• GBR in the Team competition
• the # of strong gymnasts from all over the world

I can’t name a mind blowing routine. … Perhaps some of the vaults. Uchimura, for one.

Low points:

• not many STUCK landings
• “form” has never been worse, I don’t think … especially on Horizontal Bar.

Nobody is trying to win by being the most artistic Artistic gymnast in the world. It’s all about start value.

Tomorrow CHINA and RUSSIA. Perhaps we’ll have some mind blowing routines then.

Good night.

Bulgaria’s Eddie Penev – Floor

Interesting routine. One of the few guys who tries to have “clean” execution. … Judges did not reward him, unfortunately.

… The son of two former Bulgarian team members, Penev trains at Rochester Gymnastics Academy in Rochester, N.Y. His father, Marian Penev, was a double bronze medalist at the 1984 Alternate Games in Olomouc, while his mother, Yulia Hristova, was sixth at the 1984 Junior European Championships. …

GBR hits 30 for 30

By Ollie Williams
BBC Sport in Rotterdam

Britain’s men completed 30 routines without a single major error as they set an impressive qualifying score of 357.033 points at the World Gymnastics.

The result should see GB into the men’s team final on Thursday in Rotterdam, though a day of qualifying remains.

Louis Smith scored highly on the pommel horse, while Dan Purvis could reach the floor and all-around finals.

“The boys did absolutely fantastically today, we couldn’t have wished for better routines,” Smith told BBC Sport. …

IG noted on Facebook that Louis Smith “refuses to fall off Pommels”. Not his best routine today, but the start score is monster.

This team is dangerous as they have excellent Pommels. And that’s without injured Daniel Keatings.

We chatted with coach Paul Hall after the meet. He was pleased in the understated British tradition.

Epke Zonderland – H Bar

Local hero from the Netherlands.

Overscored, I thought. He was much better in podium training, connecting the releases.
