Mattie Larson – Floor Team Finals

Here’s the botched routine that most cost USA the team Gold.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

The big deductions are the 1) fall on dismount. … A girl this powerful should not under rotate that. She might over rotate, trying too hard

… And the 2) missed forward layout out of the 2½ twist.

I can’t see any indication that she even intended to connect that.

Disaster.

GREAT JOB on the double layout, the skill she had fallen on in prelims.

Gymnastics Team Finals – VIDEOS

All of the Chinese routines are linked from Full Twist.

The Split Leap has even more videos from Team Finals.

Click PLAY or watch Japan’s Koko Tsurumi on Floor. (Check the landing of the second tumbling pass, an interesting idea for forward facing landings where you expect to be close to the corner.)

A couple of reviews say it still has some bugs. But works.

gymnastics: Boy on Uchimura

Who will be the 2010 World Gymnastics Champion?

The 2009 World Champion. Even Horton and Boy thinks so, a couple of his strongest rivals.

In the individual overall standings Japan’s Kohei Uchimura kept his first rank. With a total score of 92.231 points he was far ahead of the rest. Germany’s Philipp Boy (90.156) took a surprising second spot after the tenth and final subdivision. He pushed China’s Lu Bo (89.639) and American Jonathan Horton (89.598) to third and fourth place respectively. Teng Haibin finished ninth and will be the second Chinese in the final.

“For me it wasn’t a big surprise,” the 23-year old German Boy said. “I Knew that I am able to get 90.000 plus points. I am very happy that my allround competition was almost perfect, with only a few small mistakes. Maybe Friday I can do even better and get 91.000 points. I am trying to do the same as usual and will not try to do different things. If I make no mistake it will be OK.”

Uchimura, who even wasn’t fully fit because of his shoulder injury, seemed untouchable in the qualification.

“I don’t think Uchimura is beatable by me,” Boy confirmed. “Maybe in the next years, but he is from a different level. His gymnastics is so beautiful, he is like an idol to me.” …

People’s Daily

I’d say Uchimura’s strongest quality is stable landing. The last guy this good at STICKING was Scherbo.

His weak point? … Perhaps tumbling. Yep, tumbling. … An I’m saying that about a guy who can do triple double (VIDEO) effortlessly.

FIG has 2 guys staying up late editing video for us. And they do some very cool work.

… What’s Uchimura doing with his hands before vault?

… And what’s with that horrible landing on vault? … A small hop.
🙂

World Gymnastics Champions?

Most are predicting these two will win in the competition tomorrow in Rotterdam.

Hambuechen – H Bar at Worlds

From this angle the great Fabian looks to have very, very good form.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

Will he win the world championships on Horizontal Bar this year?

Horton will be competing 4 big releases for sure, a higher start value than this routine. (Jon didn’t make HB finals since he was the #3 American. Thanks, Darius.) Epke will try to connect 2 big releases. … Others may take the chance and go for higher difficulty, as well.

As you’ve heard over and over again, I can’t think of nicer people in this competition than Fabian and his father / coach. We’re lucky to have them. Fabian’s as compelling a personality as Li Ning, back in the 1980s.

Teng Haibin – Pommels at Worlds

The Olympic Gold medalist on Pommels in Athens had the second highest score in Team finals (15.466) tied with Tommasone of France. (Louis Smith had an even higher number.)

Zhang Chenglong – H Bar Worlds

My complaints about Horizontal Bar in general, and Chinese Horizontal Bar in particular, is getting boring.

This guy is the exception. So tall, you’d not guess he was Chinese.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube. (15.90)

Though not perfect, he may have the best form on this apparatus of anyone in Rotterdam. (Leave a comment to correct this ranking.) … And of the near compulsory routines under this code of point, Zhang does have a little bit of variety.
