the return of Peng Peng Lee

Having missed the past 2 seasons with injury, I was looking forward to seeing how the wonderkind looks growed up.

Click PLAY or watch her Beam on YouTube.

Still the same old aggressive approach. Let’s give her a couple of meets to remember what it’s like to compete.

She’s going to be a star at UCLA, that’s for sure.

Australian government gymnastics funding

Couch Gymnast is cheering on Facebook.

In Olympic host England, the government is slashing spending.

But some sports in Australia got bumped up in base funding:

Football ($700,000), hockey ($500,000), surfing ($500,000) and basketball ($500,000) …

… And the success of world gymnastics champion Lauren Mitchell, has been reflected in a rise of almost $400,000 in funding with netball also benefiting to the tune of $700,000.

Gymnastics Australia chief executive Catherine Clark said the increased funding would allow a range of participation programs and new initiatives to be rolled out nationally.

“Gymnastics is much more than just the elite end and we have over 500 clubs who are ready to open their doors to increased participation opportunities across our Gymnastics for all program,” Clark said.

“And importantly this will include strategies and resources to engage schools and school-aged participants.” …

Sports benefit from new govt funding

Australia is one of the few nations where the general public approves of their tax dollars being spent on sport.

Nitro Circus – sky diving

Nitro Circus was was an American television series that featured Travis Pastrana and his friends traveling around the world riding dirtbikes, base jumping, and performing reckless stunts. …

This is fun. Sky diving with wheelchairs, tricycles, boogie boards. And more.

Click PLAY or watch a New Zealand News feature on YouTube.

The reality TV show was canceled after 2 seasons, but there’s still talk of a Nitro Circus 3D Movie. Since Johnny Knoxville is involved, and since Jackass 3D made $50 million on opening weekend, I could see that getting greenlighted.

gymnast Bondarenko is back

Recall Alexei Bondarenko from Sydney and Athens?

He retired after not qualifying for the Russian team to Beijing.

Now a sponsor is paying for his comeback. He moved to Round Lake (where he lives with his cat Briton) and is planning how to challenge the likes of Uchimura, 10yrs-younger.

That mount, the Garrison, is named after another College gymnast who went on to captain the U.S. team at the 1988 Olympics, Kelly Garrison-Steves.

Finishing 7th on Beam in Seoul, the Garrison was in layout is called “stretched” in the Code. Tucked it just might be the Magee.
