Nastia Liukin Cup confusion

August, 2009, Nastia and USA Gymnastics announced a new competition be held on March 5, 2010 in conjunction with the 2010 American Cup. On podium!

The Nastia Liukin Cup.

At that time it was explained that the meet would be for Level 10 gymnasts. A high profile event for the best gymnasts below the Elite level.

Gymnasts would qualify from these meets, a series of invitationals known as the Nastia Liukin Cup Series:

Flip Fest Invitational, Knoxville, Tenn., Jan. 15-18
Cereal City Classic, Kalamazoo, Mich., Jan. 22-24
Rock-n-Roll Classic, Broadview Heights, Ohio, Jan. 22-24
Parkettes Invitational, Allentown, Pa., Jan. 29-31
Wisconsin Dells Gymnastics Vacation Classic, Wisconsin Dells, Wis., Jan. 29-31
The Fiesta Bowl Classic, Chandler, Ariz., Feb. 5-7
IGI Chicago Style Meet, Chicago, Ill., Feb. 12-14
WOGA Classic, Frisco, Texas, Feb. 13-14

Pikes Peak Cup, Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 19-21
Presidential Classic, Lake Buena Vista, Fla., Feb 19-21
The Long Beach Open, Long Beach, Calif., Feb. 26-28

I love the concept. And thank Nastia for helping promote all those gymnastics meets.

So what’s the confusion?

Selected from the first weekend in Covington, Ky were:

Lexie Preissman (Elite)
Amelia Hundley (Elite)

Those girls aren’t Level 10.

Leave a comment if you can explain what’s changed.

Gymnastics – Utah edges Iowa State

First report on the Utah competition was from Lya Wodraska:

Utah’s gymnastics team kept its promise. Spurred by its disappointing season-opening loss at UCLA a week ago, the No. 11 Utes brought the intensity that was lacking in the first meet to the floor Friday just as they said they’d do.

The result was a 196.3-195.35 win over Iowa State in front of 12,605 at the Huntsman Center.

While the Utes still aren’t where they want to be, the home opener was much more satisfying than their 196.6-195.125 loss to the Bruins.

Good thing the Utes improved, since No. 21 Iowa State proved to be a tough foe never trailing the Utes by more than a couple tenths of a points. If the Utes had counted a fall, they could easily have lost their second meet in a row, something that hasn’t happened to them since the 2007 season. The Utes have never started a season with two losses.

Jamie Deetscreek won the AA – 39.425.

… Dickerson’s hometown of Jacksonville, Fla., is just 72 miles northeast of Gainesville. …

“It was amazing,” Dickerson said. “I have been coming here since I was eight years old to watch the Gators and just to be out on the floor in a Gator leotard was a dream come true.”

Dickerson said she could hear and see the large contingent from her club gym, as well as the many friends and family, while she was performing on floor.
