The 2004 Olympic Floor Champion, Kyle Shewfelt, is to be inducted into the Canada Sports Hall of Fame. The first gymnast ever.
Congratulations.

His close friends Chantal Petitclerc and Clara Hughes are in this group as well.
Kyle never got the credit he deserved for Horizontal Bar. Fantastic line, form and swing.

Kyle will be assisting me at a coaching course (yet to be confirmed) in Calgary first week of June.
I apologize.
Dead certain that Shawn would never compete again, seems I’m wrong.
West Des Moines native Shawn Johnson, a gold-medal winner in gymnastics at the 2008 games in Beijing, announced … that she plans on training and making another run at the next Summer Games.
She first revealed her decision to a crowd of 8,000 area students …

It’s not going to be easy.

Des Moines Register – Shawn Johnson on going for the 2012 Olympics: ‘I’ve got a ways to go … nothing is a sure thing’
Certainly Shawn could get into shape and contend quickly on Floor and Vault. Her chances of making the Olympic team are low, in my opinion. But it would be great for the sport. And great for the up-and-coming American gymnasts if she was in the mix.

Kamloops, B.C.
I’ll be there. Can you make it to Kamloops, British Columbia? It’s a terrific tourist town.
There’s not much yet on the official competition home page.
An easier way to follow the event is on Facebook. Or on twitter (CdnGymChamps).
On the Sunday following the competition I’ll be assisting with an “open” audition for Cirque du Soleil. Anyone can try out. If interested, email me Rick_McCharles {AT} hotmail.com
Her story is the wonderful, photogenic 2003 World Champion on Bars … who did not make the 2004 Olympic Team.
She began competing for Oklahoma in 2006-07. But it wasn’t until this season that she became one of the very best College gymnasts in the nation.
I often think of the Jan. 2009 article that referred to the “Hollie Vise Reclamation Project” – From darkness, Vise finds light with Oklahoma gymnastics
How did that work out, again?

Much love.
Aunt Joyce … “one of the most stunning routines of the championships”
spanny tampson … “captivating, inspiring, and super duper talented. … one of the most memorable gymnasts of the past decade. ”
marikis on College Gymnastics Board … “Hollie Vise & K.J. Kindler … I think this year NCAA’s miracle was these two….”
Yet more. The spannytampson Hollie GLEE mash-up. Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
I just wish Hollie would smile more. Maybe she will, now that gym is finished.
Includes Weiler Kip on Bars. (Forward free hip.)

My first club coach was Heinz Weiler, brother of Willie Weiler for whom that cool trick was named.
Actually, 2 or 3 girls competed Weiler at NCAA Championships. As does Jordyn Weiber. I believe we have a trend.
