Romanian coach Forminte resigns

I’m surprised. The rumours were true.

… According to Daily Pro-Sport, Forminte said Tuesday he quit because he feels the gymnastics federation no longer has confidence in him after it called on former coaches Marian Bitang and Octavian Belu to supervise training for the 2012 London Olympics.

Forminte says “I no longer have a place here.”

Federation chief Adrian Stoica confirmed Forminte’s departure. He said he tried to dissuade him from leaving. …

FIG rejects lowering gymnast age to 15

F.I.G. is doing a superb job of “corporate” communication these days.

This is old news, but I love how it’s phrased on the FIG website:

… At mid-cycle, the 44 Council members took a moment to map out the months and years to come for its gymnasts.

No means no!

The elected members demonstrated a sense of courage and determination, turning a deaf ear to the usual “demons” that attempt to infiltrate the Federation time and again; this time around, proposals for podium warm-ups and a 15 year minimum age limit for female gymnasts.

As for the former, media demands sufficed for a rejection. The truth is podium warm-ups irritate TV broadcasters, who are looking for a certain rhythm, an entertaining show, highlights and short sequences. The downtime that would result from podium warm-ups would only serve to undermine entertainment quality and, worse, encourage networks to cover other discipline with a more suitable programme. …

Second proposal denied! The Council resisted the urge to go back in time and bring the minimum age limit down from 16 to 15 for female Artistic gymnasts. …

No means no!

You might disagree with Bruno Grandi, as I do, but you can’t accuse him of obfuscation. This press release is crystal clear.

what’s next for trampolinist Jason Burnett?

The 2008 Olympic Silver medalist easily won his 5th Canadian Sr. Men’s Championships.

Click PLAY or watch one of his routines on YouTube.

In a Gymnastics Canada interview he talks about his plan to set yet another new world record in degree of difficulty in an upcoming meet in Switzerland.

Jason says the new rules calculating total “air time” during the routine will not become official until January 2011. Leave a comment if you can confirm. Confirmed. Thanks Calítoe.

I keep hearing that Acrobatic Gymnastics is dying, their best athletes departing for the circus too soon. But this success should rejuvenate the sport, at least in the U.K.

host a Gymnastics World Cup

The International Gymnastics Federation is trying to improve their international gymnastics meets.

I’m not sure that much has been changed. This press release does not mention the BIG prize money that I expected to be a “game changer”.

Bids are open for Artistic Gymnastics:

Further to the newly approved 2011 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Cup concept, the FIG has informed all its affiliated federations, that they may now apply for the organisation of an FIG World Cup Event in Artistic Gymnastics. …

FIG World Cup Series in Artistic Gymnastics will be composed every year of two categories: the A Category “World Cup” and the B Category “Challenger Cup”.

database of injured gymnasts

Kary linked to profiles of 25 American gymnasts. And a partial inventory of their injuries.

The list is somewhat random, the intent being (I assume) to point out the dangers of Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.

Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics is a dangerous sport.

That’s certain.

We suffer as many injuries as any other Olympic sport.

I didn’t learn anything from this database. It would be more balanced if they had an up-to-date response from each of the women included.

What would Courtney Kupets say about her entry, for example?

See the database for yourself.
