Is that the same balance of gender participation in sports in the general population?
I find it hard to believe.
Here in Australia, significantly fewer females participate in sports by their own choice.

No doubt males participate more around the world. They’ve had more opportunities. More encouragement.
We should strive to change that. There’s no reason participation shouldn’t be equal.

Actually there is very good reason that participation isn’t equal as I said. Females are less likely to choose to participate in sports because fewer females are interested in sport regardless of opportunity or encouragement.
This should be pretty obvious by looking at those sports announced for the olympics which they say “can be practiced outside conventional arenas”. For surfing or skating, Females have the same oppotunites to enter the surf or go to the skate park as males. But have a look at whos on a surfboard at the beach? Nearly all males. Look whos at the skate park? Nearly all males. Nothing to stop the females going.
And whilst some might argue that the females might feel intimidated by mingling with the other males there, well it’s a well known statistic that females typically have far bigger social circles than men. They could bring their freinds to the surf or the skate park Or have their own ball games at public ovals or courts. But they usually don’t because they’re more likely to rather sit and chat. You see this sort of thing in schools where at lunchtime guys will often be playing ball and the girls will usually be sitting chatting. Nothing to stop the girls setting up their own game but if you ask them why they don’t they will tell you they are not interested.
