USA Gymnastics has named 2004 Olympic team silver-medalist Brett McClure of Berkeley, Calif., as the high performance director for men’s gymnastics. McClure, who currently is the head men’s gymnastics coach at the University of California – Berkeley, will report to Dennis McIntyre, the vice president of men’s gymnastics, and will be based at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. …
Yoichi Tomita, chairman of the Men’s Program Committee, said, “Brett’s skills and knowledge of private club programs, collegiate programs and the national team was impressive, and his presentation and interview garnered strong support from the selection committee.” …
So, it’s official, USA Gymnastics doesn’t care about men’s gymnastics. Brett’s a super nice guy, but he has zero experience for this job. He’s never coached a world or Olympic team member, nor been a part of a staff at either, and now he’s leading the entire program? Sounds like a set-up for failure.
