FIG:
The FIG Academies, a worldwide education programme for coaches in the federation’s six competitive disciplines that was launched in 2002, celebrated the 10th year of its existence in 2011. …
• 118 Academies overall
• in October, overall participation reached 3,000 coaches
• three levels of coach education (for now)
• FIG Technical Committee must have L3 by 2012
• L3 candidates who meet special pre-requisites and achieve exceptional examination results will be awarded with an FIG Coaches’ Brevet.
A total of twenty-five Academies are planned in 2012 …
It was Bruno Grandi who hand picked former MTC Chair Hardy Fink for the job of FIG Director of Education and Academy Programmes. Obviously a good choice.
Right now at an Artistic Academy in Tokyo coaches are being “coached” by Fink, Keith Russell and Valeri Liukin. I think they might learn something.
… The Academy Programme for Men’s and Women’s Artistic Gymnastics has been supplemented this year with a comprehensive Age Group Development, Competition and Testing Programme that was introduced to 17 countries in 2011 to which will be added as many as 25 more during 2012. …
Philippines MAG adopted the new Age Group rules this season reporting good feedback from coaches.

Jessica is looking to put up a rig.
But she’s not sure if they need a “standard” spotting belt, or something special.
Should they have a twist belt? … Or are standard padded belts good enough?

Last weekend was my second time presenting at the annual BC Gymnastics Congress.
One reason the major BC event of the year is so consistently good and popular is that they bring in new speakers. The line-up this year was excellent. Here are photos of just a few:
Steve stayed on to coach at a Training camp hosted by Flicka.
Rumour – Alberta is planning, for the first time, a big Congress in 2012.

Great news for Acrobatic Gymnastics in North America.
USA Gymnastics and the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) announced today that the 2012 World Acrobatic Gymnastics Championships, along with the World Age-Group Competition, will be held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex’s HP Field House at Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Fla. More than 600 gymnasts total are expected to participate in the World Championships, scheduled for April 16-18, and the World Age-Group Competition, set for April 20-22.
“USA Gymnastics is honored to host this prestigious event for the first time in the United States,” said Steve Penny, president of USA Gymnastics …

August 13th, 2011 — acrobatic gymnastics, Gymnaestrada, safety, sport medicine
One concern I had on arrival at World Gymnaestrada 2011 was safety of the participants.
With no competition, no awards on the line, you’d think there would be comparatively few injuries.
Yet I saw many people there in casts. And a few in wheelchairs.
This girl was injured 2 days before travel to Switzerland. (She came with her group, anyway.)
In Switzerland this summer, 154 people (as an example) were treated on Wednesday, July 13th, with 19 people evacuated that day to hospitals for small trauma (sprains, strains, etc.).
Organizers had 82 medical staff on duty each day to care for the 19,000+ on site.
Overall, I felt Gymnaestrada performances were fairly safe. One Acrobatic Gymnast from Portugal had a bad fall on a double back. He was taken out in a stretcher, the worst injury I saw personally.
Next day a Canadian Acrobatic gymnast (who was also showing double back) told me that he was OK.

June 12th, 2011 — acrobatic gymnastics, Aerobic Gymnastics, Coach Education, Gymnastics, Power Tumbling, Rhythmic, Trampoline
In 2010 Hardy Fink, Director of FIG Education & Academy Programmes, organized 30 courses worldwide. Yet it seems there’s no slowing down.
During the remainder of 2011 there are four confirmed Level 3/Brevet Academies:
For Acrobatic Gymnastics (Lisbon, Portugal, June 22-29),
Rhythmic Gymnastics (Tokyo, Japan, December 5-12)
Artistic Gymnastics (Cancun, Mexico, November 14-21 and Tokyo, Japan, December 13-20).
FIG is looking for host nations for these courses to be held in early 2012:
MAG-WAG French/English proposed for Europe;
AER in Europe and Spanish in Central/South America;
RG February 18-25 in Portugal and Spanish in Central/South America;
TRA proposed January 15-22 in Europe and Spanish in Central/South America;
ACRO English/Spanish proposed for Europe.
I recommend Iceland for the MAG/WAG.
