Douglas Fairbanks parkour 1920

The best free running scene in a movie I’ve seen is Sébastien Foucan in James Bond – Casino Royale.

But check out the “King of Hollywood” back in the early days:

Douglas Fairbanks, Sr. in “The Mark of Zorro“. (1920) Fairbanks was the original action star, performing all of his own stunts. (He was an accomplished gymnast) His films (“Zorro”, “Robin Hood”, “The Three Musketeers”, “The Thief of Bagdad”) are still being remade. Fairbanks’ Zorro was also the inspiration for the character Batman. Set to the music of Tchaikovsky.

Damian Walters – acrobatic parkour

If you’ve spent any time at all on YouTube, you’ve likely seen the amazing parkour / tumbler / trampolinist from the U.K.

He’s one of the best anywhere.

I like the gainer double back off high bar.

Damian posted a new video just days ago – Derby City Gym Lads 08

It’s not as high level. But still interesting.

He’s a tumbling coach. See some of his athletes here.

extreme playground gymnastics

Scott Bird of the excellent Straight to the Bar blog linked to The 6 Sickest Playground Workouts You Can’t Do.

One of those that caught me eye instantly includes using safety straps on a playground bar:

… Hailing from Colombia, these kids’ workout is more a performance than a exercise. …

This is what I love about the internet. Some teenagers with a camcorder and a playground can “invent” a new sport: Arte En Barras. It’s like Parkour on a bar.

I assume they’ve studied the (very similar) travelling rings videos.

Playgrounds are fantastic outdoor “conditioning gyms”. And they are FREE.

related post: the playground I train at myself when on holiday in Mazatlán, Mexico.

House Gymnastics

We haven’t posted on House Gymnastics in a while.

But one of the header images on the top of this page is a typical gymnast climbing a door frame. (Every mother knows all about House Gymnastics.)

Indoor Parkour. It’s growing.

Harrison&Ford House Gymnastics is a cross breed of yoga, breakdancing, climbing and gymnastics in a domestic setting. House Gymnastics can be performed by anyone, at anytime, anywhere. The greater the height or danger, the better the move. Manoeuvres must be held in position for 3 seconds to be valid.

The Women of Parkour

The New York Times posted a great article and video on free running.

In the sport of parkour, people leap off railings, jump over walls, and generally use the urban environment as their playing field. Most practitioners are men, but now women are joining the ranks.

Men practicing “free running” are often stronger in the upper body than women. But the girls have some advantages too.

… Asked what weight training goes into preparing for the pulling and pushing of the sport, Sha Mialimm Ak, 18, said: “There really isn’t any. It’s about using your body weight. So you can do push-ups and pull-ups. But it’s not important to have muscular arms to do this. It’s better to have flexibility in the whole body.” …

world free-run championships – wot ??

I had my doubts when I heard about the first world free-run contest which was hosted in the U.K.

How would they “judge” parkour / free running?

Evaluate street acrobatics?

Here’s how. …

Click PLAY or watch the first “world champion” Gabriel ‘Jaywalker’ Nunez on YouTube.

Pretty lame, in my opinion.

… According to the youtube channel for the event, the other competitors actually judged the competition.

” Each athlete performed to his own individual soundtrack and was judged on his athletic skill, creativity and technical ability by his fellow competitors. “

(via shergymrag)

Sher liked the runs of Ben ‘Jenx’ Jenkins (great gainer 1/1) and Tim ‘Livewire’ Shieff better.

UPDATE: The vibe seems a lot more fun and authentic at the 5-10 free-running convention in Salt Lake City — see video. No judges. No “champion”. Only bragging rights and street cred.

Free Running – less free in the U.K.

It had to happen.

Freestyle Gymnastics” is the British Gymnastics catch-all for “Parkour, Free Running, Urban Gymnastics and Martial Arts“.
