Aliya Mustafina 58.95 DTY

Our 2010 World Champion is back in shape. She’s got to be considered a strong contender for the Olympic AA podium.

Aliya Mustafina, performing only a portion of her full difficulty, won the all around with a score of 58.95 ahead of Grishina with 57.7 and Dementyeva at 56.55.

Observers (Maddie at the All Around forum and Trudi at the IG Forum) noted in particular the excellence of Mustafina’s double twisting Yurchenko (15.2 with an execution score of 9.4). Komova, performing only on bars and beam, acquitted herself well with a 15.85 on bars and a 15.2 beam. Dementyeva’s contribution of a 15 on beam should also not go without note. …

Sandra Izbasa new 6.1 vault

Sandra Izbasa is working on a new vault. Actually she upgraded her layout Podkopayeva to a round off flic-flac with 1/2 turn on – stretched salto forward with 1/1 turn (6.1 difficulty score). With this vault and with her double twisting Yurchenko, she has a real shot to keep the European title she won last year in Berlin. …

whither Vault?

Lloyd:

… Remember the 2000 Olympic vault final? I do. A Huge amount of tension surrounded the apparatus following the height mishap in the All Around competition, adding extra excitement to wat was already a great showcase of talent.

The lineup was starstudded: lots of top all around competitors were present along with some wildcards like Laura Martinez, whose DTY had been super consistent during her stay in Sydney. There was a nice variety of vaults, high levels of execution, and the general feeling that the vault title was as prestigious and important as any other gold medal in the sport. …

What’s happening in 2012?

Well over 90% of Vaults are Yurchenkos. Statistically they are over-valued compared with the other families.

Many of the best vaulters don’t try for finals. They don’t have time. Superseding priorities are Team and All-around.

I was so happy and surprised when Henrietta Onodi (HUN) shared the Gold in 1992.

Will changes in the 2013-2016 Code help?

I’m not yet convinced.

Ukrainian gymnastics

I’ve not yet seen anyone name Ukraine as a possible team medalist for London.

Yet they are bloody good.

… one of the top men’s programs in the world.

… With only a dozen or so guys on the national team, the unassuming Ukrainians stunned by quietly finishing fifth as a team at the 2011 World Championships, and since then they’ve only gotten better.

related – Legendre won Floor and was 2nd on Vault at that meet. Congratulations.

UpdateAfter I’d written this post, I saw Alexa Ainsworth post:

… With six apparatus to complete – anything can happen in the men’s team final, so don’t count out Germany, Russia, or Ukraine either. …

notes from Jesolo

Giulia Holzer was there, posting for Couch Gymnast:

… This competition let us know how deep the American field is and how will be difficult for Russia to overtake them. I liked a lot the dualism between the powerful and solid work from Raisman and co and the elegant, artistic but not so solid work from Russia. …

… On floor I think I saw the highest double double ever from Elizabeth Price. It was sky-high and the audience just went crazy about it! Her double layout was huge too. …
