New Life (Sudden Victory) was adopted by FIG in 1989.
Full Twist has a guest post by Anna Rose Johnson.

I’m with the majority who LIKE New Life (Sudden Victory). It makes the final day more exciting. And reduces the chance that the WINNERS will get on to the podium with a fall.

Interesting! I never liked the new life rule. I think combining the two days’ scores makes more sense in determining the ultimate champion. The old way, you couldn’t just be the best on one day; you had to maintain momentum and be your best on multiple days, which is a lot more challenging. A true champion could do it, though!
I would like compulsories brought back. I was watching US men’s team 1988 on youtube. Really cool seeing Lakes do that freakingly HIGH layed out full flyaway. And that way we can see more of the quirky corner moves on floor (backuprise piro, healy twirl, scale etc.)
My justification for including it is that gymnastics (with swimming) is a top two sport of the games. It draws HUGE eyeballs (and fills stadiums). So MILK IT with more days of gym!

I think New Life actually increases the chances someone will get on the podium with a fall. The less “data” used to determine the winner, the larger the role of chance in the outcome.
Using two days worth of scores makes it more likely the best athlete will be the one that wins.
I believe that “New Life” came about because it fit in with needs of TV.
TCO, if you want to watch something like that video, watch the women’s NCAA. It’s got everything that video of Lakes does – the 10.0 system, and for the most part good execution is valued over difficulty. If you want unique FX moves, the women’s NCAA has those, too. Seriously, half the WAG NCAA does harder dismounts of UB than Lakes did off HB. Remember that the next time you complain about the women’s NCAA.
Gabby was overscored the entire meet and by the time the AA happened it was out of control.
enough already with the gabby bashing. she won fair and square. The sport is subjective. You see and overscore however i see a fair score, others may see an underscore. and thats the nature of the sport!
