Tkachev – fast and dirty

Nick Blanton is a great coach and clinician. But you might be shocked at his QUICK and EASY method of teaching Tkachev.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

I was shocked this past year seeing boys at Taiso using that exact method. Very few drills. Throw and go.

It works. Taiso produces great Horizontal Bar guys, including Commonwealth Games Silver medalist Anderson Loran.

But I’d recommend many more progressions for the girls.

I like the way this method removes the fear of falling. Seems like the kids are aggressive 2-3 months in.
Nice work, interesting idea.

I know that introducing this drill to the girls would make them even more fearful of the drill than the actual catch!

PT, You are probably correct. I also agree with Rick, in that for teaching girls, more progressions may be more suitable.

I have taught Tkatchev’s in the belt, through manual spotting in various ways, and with the drill alluded to in the video. At the end of it all, I love drills that allow gymnast’s to ‘have a go’ with the full skill in mind – lead ups, progressions, drills, performance of separate pieces of skills, etc. are all necessary and great at the same time – but sooner or later, the gymnast just needs to have a go, give a try, in a realistic circumstance with the total skill attempted. This is why for teaching Tkatchev’s, it is my preferred method of choice.

I’ve only had a couple boys learn tkatchev, but the method in the video is the only one I had any success with.
