straight body cast hand drill

Hollowback press” drills are standard Men’s conditioning. But NOT a staple of women’s artistic strength programs.

Variations of this — usually off a low height — are some of my favourite conditioning drills for straight body cast handstand on Bars.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

MUCH faster and easier than spotting kids with the faint hope that you’ll be able to withdraw the spot over time.

That’s from Chris Sommer on Gymnastic Bodies.

His strength training manual is now available as a digital edition.

Coach Sommer, this coming November, is leading seminars in both Helsinki, Finland and Canberra, Australia.

I like the drill, however I am always nervous about training anything with bent arms. I have found that while spotting a cast handstand, by exaggerating the shoulders over the bar, spotting their shoulder, and working with them while they press from there (which is really performed like a slow and aided strength move) to the handstand 2 things occur:

1) you develop that strength,
2) you develop the technique.

A concept to mention is that the cast handstand, really a swinging move, the actual press is more or less similar to the action you find in a scissor jack; after the shoulders have reached the forward most point, they push back to over the top of the bar, which continues the motion of the legs to the handstand.
