An update on McKayla Maroney:
On Sept. 9, 2012 Olympic gold-medalist McKayla Maroney was injured on her uneven bars dismount (single flyaway) at the Ontario, Calif., performance of the Kellogg’s Tour of Gymnastics Champions. Maroney’s MRI showed a fractured tibia on her left leg, and she is currently in a brace to keep the leg stabilized. …

how, why?
Seems like an easy dismount.
She already had a broken fibula- probably overcompensating. It doesn’t look like they had the full set of mats either- Aly peeled on her Shaposh right after, and banged her knees on the hard concrete floor, because the mats were too short.
Wow! That’s fucked up.
Well she picked the best time to get injured. Right after an Olympics, with plenty of time before nationals and worlds in 2013. Lucky break, I s’pose.
She tweeted that her surgery was successful, I hope she gets better quickly.
There really isn’t an excuse for the inadequate safety mats on the tour. I just don’t get it, surely it was pointed out at set-up or rehearsals? Ali banged her knees on concrete when a Shaposh went wrong? It’s not even a skill that would send you flying 5 metres off to the side – I mean, that’s crazy.
I know it’s all part of the experience and that, but it actually sounds as though McKayla should not have been performing anyway – the only time an elite kid might compete with a serious injury is the Olympics or Worlds (out of sheer desperation).
