Gabby Douglas – book in time for Christmas

Examiner links to news that Gabby will have one book out in time for gift giving. And another in future.

… Gabby Douglas captured hearts and gold medals with her performances at the Summer Olympics. Now she’ll be telling her story (with the help of a co-writer) in a memoir due out by Christmas.

The book, titled “Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith,” will be published by Zondervan, the predominantly Christian publishing arm of HarperCollins. …

… She said, “I want people to read my story and say, ‘If Gabby can do it, I can do it too. Anything is possible.’”

LA Times

Those will fly off the shelves. :)

Graceful is not a word that could ever be used to describe Gabby Douglas. She’s powerful but her porte de bras is terrible and her feet don’t point all the way.

“Graceful is not a word that could ever be used to describe Gabby Douglas. ”

“Graceful” has been used to describe football players, track athletes, tennis players etc. Not everybody is so worried about porte de bras.

Also, I think the word “grace” as used in the title refers to God’s grace, rather than gracefulness.

I believe “grace” may be being used in the religious rather than the artistic sense in the title, especially with Zondervan as the publisher. Even if it is intended as an adjective for her style of movement (or perhaps as a play on words) the vast majority of people who will buy and read the book will not be discriminating enough about the sport of gymnastics to have any argument with calling Gabby graceful in the artistic sense.

Gabby doesn’t have a Porta-Bra?

So what.

She has a Gold Medal.

In this particular title “Grace” could also have a religious connotation. As the book is being published by Zondervan, I’m pretty sure that is why this word was chosen.

I know it’s just a quick money grab situation but I always find it annoying when athletes release books when they’re only in their teens or 20s.
