Seems it takes a serious injury to a major player to get any attention from mainstream media. Gymnastics is dangerous. FIG’s new Code rewards most whomever has the highest start score. Many times that requires athletes to risk more dangerous routines.
I previously said there’s not much we can do to reduce Achilles injury. But perhaps I’m wrong. Here’s full commentary from Dr. Bill Sands on the topic:
I’m really sorry to see another ruptured Achilles tendon. Sadly, I do know the mechanism that causes these injuries …I have a presentation that I hope to do at the USECA meeting at Congress. The research involving two types of springs is complete. One equipment company has taken the information and redesigned their floor due to the results that I shared with them some months ago.
Achilles tendon ruptures have occurred on foam and spring floors, so it’s not the spring system alone that “causes” the problem. And, herein lies much of the complexity. Again sadly, Achilles tendon ruptures are due to the interaction of “worn” connective tissues from the triceps surae group (e.g. too much training with insufficient recovery), concentration of forces in one of the bundles of connective tissues in the tendon (from Bruggemann, anatomical loading factors), foot position (increased pronation) during takeoff (athletes generally don’t take off symmetrically), and the way the spring floors recoil and move during a take off (causing sudden increased stretch of the triceps surae complex).
Interestingly, I had the first American girl to do a full-in on floor exercise (Christa Canary, I know ancient history) and she did it on two inches of ethafoam over concrete (I’m so old there were no spring floors then). In fact, with a lengthy list of excellent tumblers – I never had a single Achilles tendon rupture. However, we monitored training repetitions of skills very closely using (then) very primitive computers. In my view, there needs to be a paradigm shift in thinking to “preserve the skeleton and connective tissue while training the muscle.” Of course, there are a variety of ways to do this, but monitoring is crucial.

The device was required for some of my former gymnasts.Patent Number #4,227,321. Device called the “Safe-T-Strap” designed to prevent extreme ankle dorsiflexion in gymnasts and other athletes.
————————————————————-I’ve been studying the spring floor now since about 1994, and even back then the old 2 inch spring floor showed the same problems. I will be submitting the results and manuscript for publication after Olympic Trials. The work includes high-speed video (500-2000 Hz), Vicon kinematics (200 Hz), and the accumulation of work from myself and others for almost 20 years.
Certainly, considerably more research remains to be done. I believe I know the mechanism, but then comes the hard part, how to change apparatuses to reduce or eliminate this problem.
Modeling is going to be needed, and my ability to do that level of work is very limited (I’m a physiologist, although most seem to think I’m a biomechanist). I hope that Maurice Yeadon, Peter Bruggemann, and Jeroen Van der Eb, along with the FIG Scientific Committee will take up this issue. This work is long overdue, and current means and methods of certifying a spring floor are pretty good for engineering, but do nothing to look at the athlete-apparatus interactions. I’ve been preaching this for almost 20 years now. But, then again, who listens to me.

How can you blame the code for athletes trying harder skills in this article (Bill Sands on Achilles) and blame the judges in another (Gabby Highest Difficulty).

Gabby Highest Difficulty – “Since FIG judges no longer discriminate (much) on execution, the D-scores list would be the one to look at closest. ”
Clearly these are two separate entities, so which are you trying to blame?
I blame both.
If the judges separated the BEST (Uchimura) with for example a 9.5 on Horizontal Bar, then deducted Zou Kai for every skill (line, toe point, etc.) and gave hime 7.1 execution, we wouldn’t have any complaints.
They don’t now. The gap between those two conspicuous examples is less than 1.0.
If the Code better balanced the requirements of quality and difficulty (as they do in Trampoline, for example) I wouldn’t complain.
Both the Codes and the judges need to change in the next cycle. But I have no faith in either Technical committee (WAG or MAG) to make real change. Difficulty will still win next cycle, regardless of quality of gymnastics.
That’s both dangerous and not easy to watch. Fugly gymnastics.
Sport should be able to renew itself and evolve with the times. While technique obviously remains the first in evaluation, it is vital to take into account the theatrical aspect. Do you remember that, although Nadia Comaneci won in Montreal due to her technique, her success was also due to her more emotionally appealing performance than those of her rivals. The trend should be towards greater creativity rather than increased difficulty.
Gymnastics should remain a leisure activity for all and evolve to the heights for those who have the greatest natural talents.
A gymnast runs risks, which can be life-threatening, it is therefore important for us to take this aspect into account.
Hmmm, I’m a little lost on the comments above.
I don’t think I was trying to blame anyone. I just noted that I believe I understand the mechanism now – not the blame. Or perhaps, the comments were directed at Rick, in which case I apologize for butting in. As for injury prevention, I’ll offer a recent article:

Of course, no one wants to see gymnasts injured. Moreover, this would not be the first time that gymnasts’ performances exceeded the rules, the apparatus, and current wisdom.
As described in my old version of the USAG Risk Management Manual, risk is inherent in any sport. The issue is not complete prevention of risk, but the management of it. We are the adults (okay, maybe not me), so we have a responsibility to ensure that the sport is as safe as we can make it. A simple unilateral “fix” will never work in such a multi-dimensional and multi-demanding sport.
I must admit a fairly blissful ignorance of the Code, all I hear are complaints. In those cases I can only nod politely. It appears that others have noted a shift from artistic”ness” to acrobatics and apparently don’t like it. All I can say with tongue firmly in cheek is – duh…
Injury is nearly always multi-dimensional and multi-factorial. However, we can often find elements that are – mostly – or – predominantly – responsible. Let’s not hesitate to fix those.
Information of this type is often described as a web of interacting variables and circumstances. As such, I’ve spent the last more than 35 years in search of the darn spider. I know others have as well. Most give up because no one appears to be listening (or perhaps cares, but I hope that’s not true).
If you look at nearly all other sports, the rules are provided to promote safety and fairplay – especially contact sports. Just look at American football and see what the rules actually prevent or encourage. Nearly all help promote safety.
Short of a omniscience, we cannot predict the future. However, we can take some “best guesses” and we can fix problems once we see and understand them. I think the thing most perplexing to all is the inertia of politics and how long it takes to get these things implemented or at least studied. I probably speak for all those who work with gymnastics in hoping that we can someday get some help. Nearly all of my work has been self-financed or funded through USECA.
However, answers won’t come without effort. In a presentation I never got to make in Brazil I showed the number of scientific publications per year from PubMed running from 1980-2009. Interestingly, 1980 saw about 13 publications. The number rose to a peak of 21 in 1990, and then steadily declined to about 10 in 2009. Admittedly, these are not “coaching” publications, but this shows that the foundational scientific work scarcely exists. If you look at the publications for American football, you’ll find nearly six times more. The lack of sort of background noise of research scares me. This tells me we’re not doing our jobs (referring to me specifically). Progress and understanding don’t occur in a vacuum and this applies most importantly to injury. Let’s do better.
