I could swear I’ve seen something like that before. I think it was presented as a fun way to try to make the kids run faster. I think it was with a small dog though. Is that what they’re doing here or is it just a spontaneous moment where the dog happened to chase the girl? If it’s not, how did they train the do to run behind the girl and not go racing ahead of her? And how come nobody’s yelling, “FENTON!!!!”
I encourage gymnasts who have trouble running fast to imagine a dog chasing them. But i have never thought of actually getting a dog to chase them. Will have to try this…
hahaha cute!
Hmm, it is probably easier to train a dog to chase a girl on command than a girl to run hard at the vault.
Great post, laughed a lot. In other news, I watched all the American girls vaulting at Worlds. By far, the best run up is Maroney’s. When you look at her form, she has excellent forward lean with heels coming up right underneath her butt followed by a high knee in the swing leg. She gives up a bit with arms a little too extended at the elbows and a slight swing of the arms int the transverse plane. In my opinion she would gain a bit more speed with better arm swing, but nevertheless, the reason she gets such power off the vault is her great acceleration in the approach. As far as details are concerned, I think Marta should consider inviting an elite track coach in to one of the camps to give the girls a few pointers on form running and a few sprint interval workouts.
“…the reason she gets such power off the vault is her great acceleration in the approach. ”
No doubt that’s part of it. The bigger part is her actual vaulting technique. The coaches that took the time to teach her to run with good form also taught her to vault with good technique. Adds up to a powerful vault.
