Mustafina back in competition

I’ve still got mixed feelings about our 2010 World Champion’s return to competition.

Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.

It worked. It got her back in ‘the game’ before the Christmas break.

But Aliya’s so competitive I fear she’ll try to beat Komova next meet. That would be a mistake. The two should make it goal #1 to win the Olympics as a Team. That should be the ‘talking point’ in media interviews.

Won’t happen, I predict. Russia has no media plan that I can see.

I think she’ll be ready by Olympic time. I do prefer Komova and some of the other Russians before her though. She has mental toughness and a competitive attitude but her gymnastics besides bars are not that great. I’ll give her a lot of props for basically winning the team gold for Russia last year though. She has this fighting, passionate, fierce, attitude that I really like to watch.

I think Russia did very well without her this year. I know a lot of people likes her but she is not the only gymnasts on the Russian team who can contribute great scores. IMO even if she was healthy and injury free, USA would have still won. IMO Russia is finally stepping up and not giving up without a fight, with or without Mustafina as 2011 worlds proved this.

I think Mustafina & Komova are both smart and will try to get gold for the team first then fiercely compete against each other for the Olympic AA gold. I can’t wait to see this.

I honestly think Mustafina’s priority is Medals for the country moreso than for herself. This is very apparent in the way she is with the team and in her interviews. As competitive as she is, I don’t think it’s self-focused. She has been sited as being very nurturing to her teammates INCLUDING komova when vika was recovering from surgery. As much as I think Aliya wants to win the AA, i think she’d be more disappointed if she cost the team a medal. consider the 2011 AA, she was not AA ready but wanted so badly to contribute to the team.

Russia can qualify two gymmnasts to the AA.

If healthy, those two will be Aliya and Vika.

That means both will compete AA in prelims. And the team will be built around their strengths and weaknesses in the 3-up, 3-count Team Final.

Rodionenko has said they are in it for Gold, not Silver.

^ I know and completely agree with you. I just hope Mustafina is smart enough to not try and outdo Komova before the Olympics. If she gets injured again Russia’s chances of Team gold will most likely not happen.

And yes, most fans understands that a team of Mustafina & Komova = the highest chance of a team gold.

But I’m not going to cry and really care if they don’t win. I kind of only really care about Kohei to win MAG AA and that’s it.

Uchimura is the one thing all gymnastics people can agree on.

He’s awesome.
