2015 Pan-Am Games Toronto

Grace Chiu tells that Ricky Martin, amongst others, will perform in closing ceremonies at Pan-Am Games in Mexico.

The Games 2015 move to Canada. Ontariariarians haven’t heard much about it.

Respected Canadian sports journalist Scott Russell:

… it’s “game on” for the 17th Pan American Games, to be held in several southern Ontario communities, including Toronto, in the summer of 2015.

Survey says a significant number of folks, particularly Torontonians, aren’t quite sure what the Pan Am Games are or even that their city will soon be the host.

“We’ve got our work cut out for us,” admits Ian Troop, the CEO of the TO2015 organizing committee. “To build awareness of what the Pan Am Games are and why they’re important and why people should care.”

CBC – Can Toronto be a worthy Pan Am host?

At least they’ve got a worthy logo. :)

Having attended major sporting events all over Canada for the past 40yrs, I’m not filled with confidence to see it hosted in Ontario.

I judged Pan-Am Games 1999 in Winnipeg. Loved the event. The smaller city was a terrific host. But like Scott Russell, I have my doubts about Ontario. It’s my least favourite host Province.

Why is Ontario your least favourite host province? Just wondering.

Regina for Nationals will be great again in 2012.

Saskatoon is excellent, too.

Calgary was terrific last time.

Vancouver is always good.

… pretty much anywhere but ONT is good for me. :)

Every meet I’ve been to in Ontario has been disappointing, so far as I can recall.

The “Milk Meets” of ancient history were good, as lore tells.

Ah, but don’t forget Sault Ste. Marie, 1996. That was an awesome Nationals. Small city did a great job hosting as I recall…

Gak. You’re right. I loved that meet.

…. Didn’t seem even to be in Ontario, though.

What made the meets in Ontario be disappointing? I’m from Ontario but have never been to a major meet (here or anywhere else) so I’m just trying to understand what made Ontario meets bad and other meets good.

Too few volunteers. Too many “rules”. Chintzy hospitality. …

… And I’ll never forget the Ottawa Nationals where the hired organizer ran off with the money. Gymnastics Canada and the Provinces had to pay back the loss.

It’s hard to put into words. Over perhaps a dozen meets, only Sault Ste. Marie, 1996 (thanks Dana) and the old “Milk Meets” stand out as good meets in my memories.

BUT please Ontario, prove me wrong. Do a great job with Pan-Am Games.

I live in Calgary and enjoyed the Olympics there. Smaller cities seem to get more excited about events like this than does Toronto.

Is it because the venues are so far spread out across the city?

I would love to see the organizing committee contact Gymnastics Ontario, and it’s equivalent in the other sports, to appeal for volunteers and promote the games.

Isn’t it just the least favorite province, period? I mean NS has Halifax, Quebec has Montreal and QC and the Stl Lawrence. Alberta has oil and is less lib’rul. BC has Vancouver and Victoria and Whistler. Ontario is like a lump of the American Midwest, but colder.

Dumping on Toronto is a common pass time for the “rest of Canada”. :)

Hater :) I would imagine Alberta to be a very boring place :; Canada is pretty much Ontario. No where else in Canada matters much. Just kidding though. I’m excited that Pan Am will be in Toronto and the surrounding suburbs. I will plan to go see gymnastics then. Toronto is a FUN diverse city with a lot of more things to do than in any other Canadian cities IMO.

I’m impartial. Not a subject of her Majesty.

Actually Toronto might be a great city. Only been there once, on business and was in some suburb or such. Sort of had the impression the whole place was a larger version of Cleveland. Or is it like Chicago? (which is like New York without the attitude, Lincoln Park and all).

Also, we want Alberta to defect from Canada and join us, so we have teh oil and all. We hear they are like Canada’s Texas, so they’ll fit in OK…

P.s. I got Rick to acknowledge one of my trolls…happy day! :)

It’s so funny to see news about this. I performed as an acrobat for Toronto’s presentation at the selection conference for 2015 in Mexico 2009 . It seemed so far away, and it still does! They gave a pretty killer presentation, though.
