children in Mixed Martial Arts

The video below shows two young boys, both under the age of ten, taking part in a grappling match, inside a cage, in front of a crowd of severely inebriated adults.

Yes you read that right. …

I can barely watch adults in this brutal sport.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a full contact combat sport that allows the use of both striking and grappling techniques, both standing and on the ground, including boxing, wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Karate, Judo and other styles. …

Junior Japan International today

I finally found the venue for the Junior Japan International, September 24-25th in Yokohama. It’s the Yokohama Cultural Gymnasium, built to host the 1964 Volleyball Olympic tournament.

Thanks for the directions, Cincinnati Gym.

Lexie Priessman and Amelia Hundley of Cincinnati Gymnastics Academy will compete on the women’s side, while Adrian de los Angeles (SCATS) and Sean Melton (Orlando Metro) will compete for the junior men’s title. …

SCATS’s Grigor Chalikyan and Cincinnati’s Mary Lee Tracy will be the U.S. coaches …

Venezuela and Brazil arrived in Tokyo September 20th, the first nations to do so. They’ll do their final camp here, acclimatizing to the new time zone.

Russian Teams to Worlds

UPDATE: This seems not yet to be the “official” announcement.

Andrei Rodionenko (via RIA Novosti) via Rewriting Russian Gymnastics:

Men: Garibov, Khorokhodin, Ignatyev, Belyavski, Ablyazin, Cherkasov, Golutsotskov, Pluzhnikov

Women: Afanasyeva, Komova, Dementieva, Belokobylskaya, Nabieva, Polyan, Paseka

… Rodionenko is apparently worried about the conditions out in Tokyo in the wake of Typhoon Roke which killed 12 people and is causing landslides. There is some discussion of the consequences of cancelling this event. …

I just arrived Tokyo. Sunny skies. No sign of typhoon. It’s already passed, I assume.

giants on a playground bar

Eddie Umphrey:

The kids at gym didn’t think a giant was possible on a playground bar. Little did they know that’s where I learned my giants, flyaway and kip. True story. Ya ya terrible form, but the bar was still wet from the rain.

beam is FUN

Gymnastics Prayer:

Now I warm up for the meet
I pray my competition I can beat
And if I fall amidst the cheers
I pray I can hold my tears
And one more thing, success or not
I pray the creator of the beam be shot.

Or should the creator of Beam judging regulations be shot?

Beam is fun.

USA Team Tokyo – commentary

… The gymnasts going to Japan are, for the record, Jordyn Wieber, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Alicia Sacramone, Anna Li, Gabrielle Douglas and Sabrina Vega.

Douglas and Vega, both true all-arounders, are likely to battle it out in podium training for the sixth spot. One will be the U.S. tablesetter, the other backup in case of an injury. …

Blythe Lawrence – Americans to Tokyo: Digesting the new U.S. Worlds team

Fact is, many different combinations of gymnasts could have been selected for the World Championships. The USA has more depth than any other nation.

In the end, potential for a big score on Bars during the 3-up, 3-count Team final added Anna Li to the list, showing it’s still possible to be a 2-apparatus specialist on a top team in 2011. Like Nabieva.

Though she hasn’t competed well, so far, as an Elite, I have a lot of faith in Anna. Good call. If she’s needed, she’ll hit.

super slow motion gymnastics

Having athletes review video of their training is standard practice in 2011. Some coaches use the technology better than others.

What’s the next step?

This summer at camp George Novak was showing kids super slow motion. It’s different. It’s better. I’m thinking it will be much more effective.

George uses one of the new Canon ELPH series, not expensive.

Leave a comment if you’ve tried it with your athletes.

safety strap bar – blotchy wrists

26yr-old Lisa got back into safety bar straps after 12yrs away from the gym.

That’s normal. Broken blood vessels. No serious harm done.

She had some explaining to do next day at work.

After a few days training her wrists will get “used to it” and show less colour. Padding would help, too.

USA World & PanAm Teams

The only prediction I saw that named all 7 gymnasts for Tokyo correctly was … Blythe Lawrence. Astute in picking Vega.
