5yr old Ballet

5 year old Kaylee takes 3 hours a week of Classical Russian Ballet.

This is very helpful for her rhythmic, artistic gymnastics and competitive dance. …

The secret of the former Soviet system was to schedule for young kids an hour daily of artistic preparation (mainly ballet) and an hour daily of tramp.

But in 2011 in a free market, most gyms simply cannot afford that much time. Nor can they budget for ballet instructors, many who insist on being paid more than coaches.

It’s a dilemma.

Many little girls who love acrobatics, hate dance. Another dilemma.

I understand the point about money, but not the point about whether girls enjoy it or not. Sorry, being able to dance/move fluidly is part of being a gymnast. Forgoing that part isn’t, or shouldn’t be, an option. Show me all the athletes who just looooooove conditioning! But you still make them do it, right?

When I was competing we worked with a ballet teacher 2-3 times a week, and I don’t recall any of our coaches being particularly concerned with whether we wanted to do it or not. It was understood that this was part of our training and protest against ballet would have been tolerated just as well as protest against conditioning. Which is to say, not at all.
