Shallon Olsen – Double Twisting Yurchenko

The 10yr-old phenom, tiny Shallon Olsen, is improving.

We were blown away by this vault.

Here’s her Floor routine with pike 1/1 in mount, triple twist dismount.

Shallon (born 2000) trains at Omega Gymnastics in Vancouver.

Like many others, I’ve predicted that doing this much difficulty in competition would cause serious problems for her. Honestly, I can’t see any trouble yet.

She looks great.

As she grows, they’ll need to spend more time on basics, which certainly could be better.

The vault is great. The floor … is a bit of a mess, no?

Also, why is her vault difficulty score a 6.9?

Very impressive! The floor for me was messy but she has a bit of style – not something you often see in a 10yr old. The little head flick to the side in her split leap is one example. But yes, I agree with you Rick, the basics need improving.

The only other thing I can see that may cause her to struggle is that learning all these skills before a centre point of gravity shift (which is sure to occur in the next two years as she grows) may cause frustration as skills may not be easy to retain. It will be difficult to teach form and tension when this occurs. That and injury, but that is a problem for all gymnasts. But saying that her coaches probably know more than me and have a plan for her. Regardless, she is definitely a major talent!!

Talk to me when she’s 14 or 15 and still at the top of the sport in our country and then I’ll start to get excited!!

Her vault looks like a 1/4 on.

she IS a talent, with unbelievable potential- even her maturity over the last year has made her a delight to watch and interact with. Great Job to Shallon and her family!

Better than 3 months ago.
Good luck for you, girl… See you in Rio, 2016

I assume that’s some sort of BONUS system in the High Performance Novice rules. But they change the rules so often that it’s hard to keep track.

wow those skills are massive for a 10yr old!
I must say though in a nice way that I dont’ know if i can see her make it healthy to 16…if at 10 she’s already doing triple twist and yurchenko double can you imagine what she’ll have to do at 16?
either way i have to say she’s amazing!

10 years old and doing that level of difficulty?

well, off the top of my head, so were Stephanie Willem, Tim Slottow, Dwane Holland….can anybody tell me how many WCs and OGs (or for that matter any Sr. internationals) they accomplished?

the coaches may have a plan….so does Mother Nature….

subject to future history, agree with Id

That is just amazing, without a doubt she is extremely talented. I also agree with Jim and Id that it’s the future that really matters and not what she is throwing now.

But it is fair to say that other then that spectacular vault, she has a growing group of competition with the other three events. Interestingly, Shallon’s “D” score overall was 26.9 and Brianna’s was 23.3, a differential of 3.6. Shallon’s execution score was 34.15 and Brianna’s was 34.9. And Heaven had 3 out of 4 events that were also higher in execution then Shallon, so here you have a good example of how important it is to have good basics and not push all the difficulty so early.

She’s so young and has yet to be challenged with anything that elite gymnasts must go through; there are so many things that make it exceptionally hard to survive to senior and stay intact mentally and physically. Time will tell, but for now she looks like she is enjoying it and having fun!

knees and toes, knees and toes. If she can’t do that when she’s young, she’ll have a hard time adding in the proper form as she gets older and bigger.

Honestly, I think she could land 3/1 Yurchenko right now. … She has an uncanny ability to get her feet down under her body. Like a CAT.

Looking at Rogers and Mackie now, I’ll bet that Brianna will have greater carreer…
