Quad turns on beam

Coach Kazukuni Ohno has been posting video on Facebook of his girls doing this amazing skill in training.

Click here to watch the best one so far, Mai Murakami.

Here are two more that have made it to YouTube.

I’ve seen mentions that Mai Murakami is training handspring double front on Vault. Leave a comment if you’ve seen that video.

that is truly amazing.

I’ve seen the video of Murakami doing a drill on vault that is supposedly for a handspring double front. She does a triple front over the vault from a trampoline. It’s awesome, but I really don’t know much about vault drills and progression, so whether or not she’s anywhere near putting her hands on the table for a double front is beyond me.

I have one gymnast who has done handspring double fronts in training into a pit (which would have easily landed out of the pit), but since her goal is NCAA rather than elite we’ve backed off training it a bit.

Also: that facial expression when she hits it in the first link to Murakamai is the reason coaches go in to work each day.

Here’s the link to her doing the training drill for the vault.

Avril Enslow from New Zealand says she’d love to award a G-part, but that it would likely be rated F.

The one other than murikami, the first embedded vid, is much prettier to me

i think a G is too high. F is just nice. 0.6 for a TURN! wow! hahaha

Actually, if you watch, Mai’s would unfortunately not “count” because her foot on completion of the turn is place behind her planted foot. It must be placed in front for it to count. Nonetheless, it’s a freaking quad turn, it’s still amazing!

It has nothing to do with where the free foot lands, that is an old rule. It is the direction of the turning foot and when the heel drops that decides completion.

Gem, you are correct, it does not matter where the free foot lands, but as judges we are looking for where the hips and shoulders are facing at the start and on completion of the turn (as well as when the heel drops…).

I actually like Fujii’s turn better than Murakami’s – it’s cleaner and more controlled. Murakami is a great trickster but she still looks a bit like she’s chucking her more difficult skills, that turn included.

(Personally, I’d rather Murakami stick to the triple turn in combination with a layout stepout. Yeesh.)

She makes it look soooo easy! That’s what I love about this sport.
