GSP training gymnastics for UFC

Canadian star Georges St-Pierre (GSP) shows muscle-ups on Rings in preparation for the first-ever Ultimate Fighting Championship® in Toronto, at the Rogers Centre Sat., April 30, 2011.

Coach Kelly Manjak had their tickets confirmed on his birthday. So far it looks like a sell out, a record gate (ticket sales) for MMA.

I’m pretty sure its just the first one in Toronto, they’ve had them in Quebec before.

I love GSP. He is a great mixed martial artist. I love that he goes to all sports to make himself better. However, last time I saw his back flip he needed some help!

Yep, they have held four in Montreal (UFC 83, 97, 113, & 124) and one in Vancouver (UFC 115).

As for GSP, I find it very interesting that he is doing gymnastics training in preparation for a fight. If I were his strength/conditioning coach, I would probably include something like this outside of a 8-12 week training camp. It simply is not sport-specific enough in my opinion and there’s always a risk of injury just from his technical training/sparring – I’d hate to take any unnecessary risks like training gymnastics. If he were just doing strength elements, that’s one thing. But, flipping is entirely another. The Olympic weightlifting that he has been doing is very beneficial.

With that said, I was watching the UFC Primetime show the other night and his current strength coach had him doing bench press with his feet up in the air – that’s hardly correct or safe! Apparently, this guy is supposed to be one of the best lifting coaches in Canada? Has Canada ever done much in Olympic weightlifting? If that guy is considered one of the best, maybe it’s time for somebody new. GSP needs to re-hire his old coach – Jon Chaimberg.

Anyway, GSP should have no problem with Jake Shields unless it hits the floor and then it could be challenging. I don’t expect GSP to have any problems, but then again…it’s still a fight.
