New and interesting elements that were performed at the 1987 USSR Gymnastics Championships.
Click PLAY or watch it on YouTube.
Gymnasts shown are Shushunova, Pryakhina, Sarkisyan, Zadorozhny, Schepotchkin, Porplenko, Kharkov, Rodion, Martsinkiv and Tikhonkikh.
The first triple back in competition was not Liukin, but Yuri Porplenko, seen in that highlights reel.
He did it first at the USSR Cup in Jerevan, Armenia, April 1986.

I am surprised that this video is showing up again. It has been talked about on message boards before. I guess she just found it.
I thought Vladimir Gogoladze was th first. He also performed a triple back off of hb at those championships.
Gogoladze was the first to do a triple back on floor in the Olympics. And triple backs off high bar were nothing special by 1988. It was pretty standard even by 1983.
While we are on the subject of Liukin, it’s interesting to note that he also wasn’t the originator of the full-twisting layout tkatchev on high bar. All the ex-Soviet guys say it was Stepan Martsinkiv who did it first.
Stepan Martsinkiv ??
THANKS. That’s the first I’ve heard.
But cannot find anything online with a search for “Stepan Martsinkiv gymnast Tkachev”
It’s right in the video. He’s the one doing the full-twisting tkatchev.
I am sure there are very few skills that Soviet gymnasts got credit at Worlds for doing first, that many others couldn’t do back at home.
Ha. … Thanks Hertzen.
