Canada had a pretty good meet. … I expected Brazil to be better than this.

I expected much more from Brazil also. But with Jade Barbosa, Daiane dos Santos and Diego Hypolito it would have been much better. Even though it should not be an excuse.

Brazil was seriously missing their best athletes. Adrian Santos and Gabriela Soares took part in their first international competition, so it is to be expected that they were nervous and commited more mistakes than normal. Performance on the beam was disastrous and even the only gymnast who actually hit her routine (Priscila Cobello on beam) told to a friend of mine that she could do much, much better. The boys will be able to rely on Diego and Arthur pretty soon. And they are performing some huge vaults. Also, it was the first international competition for Felipe Polato, but still he performed very well on vault. And the team had to cope with the last minute omission of Augusto dos Anjos. So, the results are fairly good for two teams somewhat lacking international experience.

Regarding the Worlds… Daiane will probably not go to the Worlds because the team needs bar workers and beam workers, and Daiane is still rough on floor, let alone beam and bars. Probably the team that will go to the worlds will be Ethiene (beam and bars), Adrian (vault and floor), Jade (AA), Priscila (AA), Bruna (AA) and Daniele (AA). Diego has a new floor routine with a 6.9 SV, so it would be wise to keep an eye on him. And apparently Sasaki is training a second 7.0 SV vault, so he will be a strong contender for the vault finals (and hopefully a medal).

Good luck to the boys and the girls!

I’m back with more news from Brazil.

Good news is that Jade Barbosa is back. Word is that she has been training Amanar and Cheng vaults again, but she is not quite nailing them as of yet. Still, she has been landing strong yurchenko double and Lopez vaults, and should be expected to perform these vaults at worlds.

The WAG team is composed by Jade Barbosa, Daniele Hypólito, Adrian Gomes, Bruna Leal, Priscila Cobello and Ethiene Franco. Grabriela will be the alternate gymnast. That is to be expected, though. Yay for Adrian! She is an old favorite of mine and I am overjoyed to know that she has made it to the team!!

Bad, bad news is that Brazil’s three best male gymnasts will not make it to Worlds. Diego is out with a foot injury, and Arthur Zanetti and Victor Rosa are both out due to shoulder injury. The MAG team could probably have a hard time dealing with the pressure this year. Too bad, I guess…
