Divers are much more artistic than Artistic gymnasts.
… But are they are allowed to “cowboy” saltos on some skills. Leave a comment if you know the rules on that. (Perhaps we could get more specific on our gymnastics regulations.)
UPDATE: From Mike:
D 8.5.2 During the flight, the position of the dive shall be at all times aesthetically pleasing. Should any of the positions not be shown as described below, each judge shall deduct ½ to 2 points, according to his opinion.
Tuck (C)
D 8.5.7 In the tuck position the body shall be compact, bent at the knees and hips with the knees and feet together. The hands shall be on the lower legs and the toes pointed.
It’s not specifically “allowed”. But is used as judges evaluate from the side.

The prefered postion in tuch is to have the knees and feet together. But remember that Diving is judged from the side so if the split isn’t too extreme (pulled wider then shoulder width) the judges can’t see it. There is a lot of little “tricks” that divers use. You have to weigh the added benefits of being able to finish a dive 3′ higher, the ablity to spot the water sooner between your legs because you split tuck (cowboy) and that of the potentional of losing .5 – 2 points from each judge.
The point of the split tuck is to being able to shorten your radius and thus spin faster, this only works of you can pull the knees apart enough that you can position your chest between your legs.
In my opionion there is no point in pulling the knees wider then the shoulders as it will not allow any more space to place your chest in closer and just looks plain ugly.
If you notice the chinese will also do split pikes or bow their legs and turn there feet in to touch at the toes or nearly so, this creates a gap between the legs so they can spot between the knees and see the water sooner. Were as in a traditional pike position where the knees are squeezed together you have to look over your toes to spot and you don’t get to see the water as long or as soon as if you can look between your legs. once again if the judges can’t see it they wont deduct for the legs not being together.
They’re judged from the side so it is most likely either allowed or rarely deducted for
Dude, that’s a hell of an image to open up to. You should know that the top half of that photo is what confronts your viewer when they first open your page, and it is kind of…explicit-looking.
the rule as I understand it is cowboying is OK as long as you can’t see it from the side
Don’t quote me, but when I took a diving class in college I’m pretty sure that’s what the teacher was telling a guy to do on inward fronts.

Good point. I replaced it.
I liked that one better.
Yep, that’s a little better. That was an early morning shock whilst drinking my coffee. I prefer not to be confronted with all the bits and pieces!
LOL Dana! With aging grandparents, I’ve spent so much time in an ICU lately that I’ve become totally desensitized to this.
… “marble bag”, as Sandy would say.
