Nastia debuts Supergirl for JCPenney

I swore I’d ignore Nastia’s many marketing triumphs … until she admits the competitive career is over. Far better would be to announce retirement … then unretire later if she makes that decision. How Alicia did it.

But her latest greatest venture really is getting good buzz online from the “normals”.

The collection of dance wear, dresses and super-girly pieces like leggings and shrug tops is aimed at the back-to-school set.

“My fan base is mostly young girls and I wanted to use the line to inspire them,” Liukin explained. “At the Olympics I did my routine on the uneven bars to the song ‘Supergirl’ by Saving Jane and when it came time to name the collection, I thought, ‘What better way to feel empowered than to wear the Supergirl shield on your clothing?’” …

“I swore I’d ignore Nastia’s many marketing triumphs … until she admits the competitive career is over.”

Hmmm. Just the other day I was watching a story about how the Iroquois Lacrosse team can’t play in the World Lacrosse Championships because they refuse to use US passports. They will have to wait four years for the next championships.

I think you should either admit that you don’t care that much about Nastia’s apparent lies or stop printing stories about her marketing triumphs like you said you would. It shouldn’t matter what anyone else is buzzing about.

Who is Nastia hurting by not announcing her retirement? Chances are she won’t be back, but she may still be unsure of it. It’s her decision and she’ll make it when she’s ready. I don’t see everyone getting upset over the fact that Chellsie Memmel hasn’t officially retired.

Good for Nastia to get this deal. It brings attention to gymnastics and I hope it does well.

I believe she does not announce retirement at the request of her agent. To me that’s dishonouring her fans.

Be honest. That’s all I ask.

How is it “dishonouring” fans to be unsure if you want to continue competing. She has been honest about the fact that she’s not in the gym right now. I didn’t know gymnasts owed fans explanations of their lives.

That’s a much bigger question, ally.

Should Tiger Woods be a role model for fans? Or simply golf?

I’m a fan of Nastia the gymnast. … Nastia the entrepreneur, not so much. I wish her well in business ventures. But on this site I’m only interested in covering her if she’s an athlete or coach.

But to answer your question, if I’m right in thinking that Nastia has no intention of ever competing again, yet does not make that announcement as it might make her slightly less marketable as a celebrity, that’s dishonest.

She dishonours me as one of her fans.

If I’m wrong, I’ll apologize profusely when she makes her return.

I see what you’re saying, Coach. Do you feel that way about every gymnast who hasn’t formally announced retirement, Memmel, Bieger, several of the men?

“On this site I’m only interested in covering her if she’s an athlete or a coach.” Since when? This site has covered all kinds of things former gymnasts have done outside the gym. Kerri Strug’s marriage, Shannon Miller having a baby, etc.

I prefer to read news of former gymnasts at a site like this, as opposed to blogs written by people who take joy in ripping gymnasts apart (a few of which you have linked on this site.)

My first comment, ally, is to say I wish I hadn’t responded to you.

But now that I have …

I’m only talking about those highest profile athletes trying to be full-time “celebrities”, Shawn and Nastia being highest on the list.

You’ve got me on the second point. To clarifiy I am not interested in being a publicity vehicle for every venture those gymnasts sign on for. Nastia and Subway, for example.

That’s the end of my responses for now, ally. We’ve reached the point of this creating more heat than light.
