gymnastics – training Ring swing

Two 11yr-old demonstrators show highly proficient ring swing for their age.

Video taken from a coaching clinic at Calgary Gymnastics Centre.

They can both do giants but are only rarely allowed. (It’s important not to get in the bad habit of bending the elbows.)

Update. These boys have spent a fair amount of time swinging in “safety straps”. Though time consuming, this drill has helped a lot.

Any particular drills used to train such massive swings?

They’ve done a fair bit of swing with “safety straps”. (Coach Miguel Constante.)

But these two, in particular, seem to have a feel for ring swing. Neither is particularly strong yet.

Yes, I would love to hear how they’ve developed those swings, especially at such a young age. Some coaches recomend straps, but I’ve found they are very difficult to get on and end up wasting a lot of time.

Any tips for using the straps? What about wearing them as well as their grips?

It’s awkward wearing straps on rings.
Only about half of boys get “comfortable” with them, in my experience.

They are better used with younger, lighter boys.

The straps are a little longer than the ones they use on a horizontal bar. No grips needed.

I’ll try to post some video of boys using them successfully. And unsuccessfully.

Straps on rings? I’ve never heard of such a thing.

A video would be great.

Wonderful swing for an 11year old on rings. Why are they only allowed to giants occasionally. Is it purely because they may develope bad form because of bent arms, or are they physically to young to be working giants on rings regularly.
