Is it me…or do I remember better ‘sticks’ when there was no ‘required’ landing mat to land on?

eg: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htBojtD9FIw

just the good ole landing module, no soft mat?!?!

thoughts?

The soft mat is a disaster… there’s hardly a cold stick out of the whole bunch.

Has the soft mat reduced injuries? If so, I wouldn’t call it a disaster.

Some of those double layouts were pretty ugly. I don’t know they got into a “best dismount” video.

I like 3, 28 and 29.

So, choustonlv, let me get this straight. You’re asking about stuck landings and your comparison is Level 10 National gymnasts against Shannon Miller? Ummm….okay.

To address your issue with the soft mats: In my opinion, any coach who is more concerned with a stuck landing than the health and well-being of his/her gymnasts needs to re-evaluate his priorities.

The bottom line is that if a dismount is done well and the gymnast is able to “open” at the right time due to the excellence created by all of the technique going into the dismount, then the landing surface is not as important.

Personally, I think sticking is usually overrated in the fact that coaches who overly concern themselves with that are usually not paying enough attention to the technique of the skill itself.

There were some great dismounts but the best I feel was Alyssa Lopez (Energym Gymnastics) Region 5 Junior C. She did a beautiful Layout 1/1 out. I do have video of it and I will post it at some point on youtube.

28 is the best, IMO.

oooo Troy, got a stick up your butt about that one, eh?

Get off your high horse bud. In fact the video couldn’t have been less about Miller…more about the surface she was landing on. If you managed to put your coaching ego out of the way and just read – you would have picked that up…..

The surface Miller landed on was called a landing module, by Continental Sports, I landed on many of those things in my time, when I was good and ready….without a soft mat and with no injuries. It was a preference in our gym, since the soft mat did not feel stable at all on the ankles.

And to put it in real terms – titles; local, regional, national, World, and Olympic have been won, or lost on…stuck landings.

I mean come on, “the excellence created by all of the technique going into the dismount”, as most coaches know and don’t need preaching usually increase the chance of a stuck landing anyway.

Here’s another video for your to chew over. I’ll give you a heads up…it’s about the landing surface:

even the sound of that ‘stick’ makes me fall in love with gymnastics over and over again.

If you’re interested in the health and wellbeing of your athletes…teach them Yoga.

Namaste

Choustonlv: Shannon Miller was talented enough she could have stuck a vault landing on a log rolling in the water, blindfolded and drunk.

A little bit of a different league than the level 10s. Just a little bit.

I’m kind of partial to that Arabian double front.

#12 Kel B on 06.09.10 at 6:14 pm

I liked 29 best

#13 Eve on 06.09.10 at 11:04 pm

I agree – 28 is lovely – open position, nice swing, stuck landing! :)

#14 Troy on 06.11.10 at 8:07 am

choustonlv, your response is very enlightening (about your personality, at least).

My main point was that dismounts that are done correctly can be stuck on either surface.

My other point was that if it comes down to sticking more consistently or protecting my gymnasts’ bodies, I will side with protecting every time.

I’m not sure where you got that my “coaching ego” was the problem, but if you are a coach, I hope you are giving your gymnasts’ parents some literature with a disclaimer informing them that you think that coaches who care about their childrens’ health and well-being should be teaching yoga.

What kind of person says things like that? Don’t we want coaches in any sport to be concerned about the athlete’s health and well-being above all else?
