I've seen double back introuduced as a very high tuck to land, fall back, on tramp. Gradually the gymnast gains confidence in over rotating. They progress to 1 1/4 to land on the back (on a mat) usually without prompting. The next stage is the same 1 1/4, but the coach catches the gymnast in the tuck before they hit the tramp. This is scary, but really gives the confidence that they know they have enough rotation by themselves. Of course, it needs a confident qualified coach who is well trusted by the gymnast, and usually a smaller, light gymnast. From there the double back is easy and not scary at all.
