Aunt Joyce’s Ice Cream Stand is no more.
But not to worry. He’ll be back
“… I am going to take a brief break in order to get some things taken care of and sorted out, but I will be back.
I also made another formspring for those who read that. I won’t have the same name anymore. I’m now AuntJoyce on formspring.”
He’s one of the most prolific bloggers out there, covering both Artistic Gymnastics and Ice Skating.

AWWW NOOO I miss him already!! Great blogger.
1. He’s got way too much ice skating.
1.5. I really hate how he mixes sports in the same post.
2. He does have some good new content and shrewd insights/analysis. There is a brain ticking inside there…I can tell. Same with Tampson. You can see the signs of smarts.
3. Not crazy about the flamboyant homosexuality. Over the years, I’ve grown more and more libertarian about that stuff and had friends who were and all (not sure I’d want my sister to marry one, JOKE). And I got along fine with Janafan and Denn and all on WWGym (now the Nastia loverz, I draw the line at…we must have some standards.)
But still, I’m not sure it helps gym to have this sort of attention. When I’m the only clear heterosexual male on a gym board, that makes me wonder. Are those people who deprecate male gym as gay correct? (I don’t think there’s that much, to be honest with the participants, but fans?) Or does it just become something cultural where once it becomes labeled as gay, others steer clear of the sport (as spectators)?
I’ve even had this same discussion (a little) on wrestling. And God knows, if you ever did high school wrestling, it is the most badass sport around, I don’t care if you have to wear a singlet.
4. I think he’s hiding because some people called him on some edits he made. To give him credit, he allowed all their comment criticisms through.
He’s had several blogs over the years TCO.
Could just be a “refresh”.
He’s already posting again.
I would like to invite everyone to reread TCO’s post and substitute the world “Jew” or “African American” for “homosexual”.
Aunt Joyce actually wrote very little about MAG, and nobody in WAG or figure skating even cares if there are gay male fans, so I don’t see a huge issue here.
Dave, where is he posting?
BAN HIM. BAN HIM.
… TCO, I mean.
Seriously, having TCO in the male sex gives the rest of you guys a bad rep. You should kick him out of your gender.
Methinks TCO is one of those straight guys in gymnastics who are scared silly of gay men. Yeah, I said SCARED. They’re so scared they’ll be somehow tarred with the gay brush, or that some guy will come on to them in the shower. Please. The gay men I know are way too grown-up for that mess, and most people outside of gymnastics could care less about MAG or who is gay or not. People in MAG wonder why WAG is more popular among both fans and the general public ? That stupid hyper-macho “I’m not a fag” homophobic BS is one of the reasons why many gymnastics fans (including me) won’t give MAG the time of day. Check out the late Gary Coleman imitating Mr. T. That’s what these guys look like-ridiculous. People know when you’re trying too hard to be something you’re not.
I really liked some of his posts. His one on Shayla Worley for example. I will miss reading that kind of stuff. He put out interesting opinions and helped me learn about what elite/ college gymnastics is all about.
However, some of his posts were a little mean. Most elite female athletes are teenagers. Teenage girls often have issues with their growing bodies. Calling any woman fat is mean, and I have little patience for men who do this. Men’s bodies are wired differently to women’s bodies. It is easier for men to lose fat and gain muscle, so I get annoyed when any man, gay or otherwise, criticises weight gain in a women who is going through puberty.
Weight is often brought up with WAG but never MAG. What gives? If people are able to do difficult tricks with good execution, their weight is obviously fine.
None the less, I will miss Auntie Joyce. He provided lots of good analysis and links to videos that I would not have otherwise found.

MAG has something comparable, actually.
Though it is perhaps 10% as big an issue.
Men are never STRONG enough. They believe they are “weak.
Bilozerchev, World Champion by a long shot, interviewed at the end of the meet famously announced that he was “very weak”.
Fair enough, Coach Rick…but what you are describing is the pressure some men may be putting on themselves, while Kary is describing judgements about gymnasts’ bodies made by others and broadcast all over the Net.
It’s very, very rare to read a blog post or message board thread criticizing a male gymnasts body, and those usually show up when only the guy is obviously out of shape.
When it comes to the weight issue, I think it’s fair game to talk about that in the context of how it might affect performance, but Aunt Joyce sometimes went a bit too far.
I think the guy realizes that, as he wrote on his new formspring that if and when he blogs again, he’s probably going to tone this stuff down.
I was meaning exactly what Ono No Kamachi was talking about.
Women’s bodies in general seem to be open to scorn, and Auntie Joyce would often attack the bodies of female gymnasts and ex female gymnasts, which I think is mean. Lack of strength is fair game for attack. Inability to do skills is fair game. Lack of form is fair game. Lack of execution is fair game. The actual body of a gymnast should not be attacked when none of these things is an issue.
And on Shawn and Nastia. I google them to find their names to be followed by “fat” and “weight gain”. When they stopped training regularly, some of the muscle mass would have turned into fat mass which takes up twice the amount of space as muscle mass. This would have made them look a bit bigger. Maybe they gained a bit of weight as well. Either way, neither girl is fat. My country has lots of fat people. I understand that the USA does as well. Nastia and Shawn are not among them.
Men may lack strength, and it is much easier lose muscle mass than gain it so a few days without a workout can mess things up a lot. Yet when I hear commentary about men, actual attributes of their gymnastics such as difficulty, strength and execution are discussed. I wish that this was the only conversation with WAG as well.
1. Muscle mass does not “turn into fat mass”. That statement is scientifically daft.
2. Shawn is currently FAT. Face it. She is. Get away from the carefully taken photos to try to hide it. Put her in harsh light, in a bikini and then find the comparison with the Peele videos. Or caliper her. Face facts people! And I’m not talking about her being 18% instead of 14%. I’m talking about her being fat by normal standards for the population.
How is Shawn doing, I wonder.
She’s young enough to make fairly quick fitness gains if she’s serious about the comeback.
Sentimentally, I hope Shawn is doing well and I hope she makes a full comeback. It will be very very hard for her though.
I don’t think Shawn is fat by normal standards of the population. I have trained with people who are fat by normal population standards (i.e. 50-60% Body fat). She is nowhere near this. For women whose bodies are primed to make babies, 25-30% is not unusual. Gymnasts realitically have to be lots below this, but female gymnasts still need to carry more body fat than male gymnasts unless they are keen on getting osteoperosis.
Your eyes are skewed by the sport. Shawn Johnson is gymnastics fat. She is not fat in real life. Sorry. You want fat? Go to Wal-Mart.
My eyes are NOT skewed by the sport. They’re informed by losing 70 pounds in 6 months and reading a buttload of stuff on diet and body and all that. They worked the whole dancing with the stars on hiding Shawn’s fat. Put her in a bikini and photograph her in harsh light against a whit background, front, back and side (not posed, unflexed). She will clearly be fat. I’ll bet you money that if we caliper, we find the same thing.
I’m not asking her to be a super waif. (She might, MIGHT benefit from that for gym). But we’re not even in that realm. Just in the normal healthy human realm, Shawn is overweight. Her blood chemistry, health outlook and appearance to males will ALL improve from dropping weight.
