database of injured gymnasts

Kary linked to profiles of 25 American gymnasts. And a partial inventory of their injuries.

The list is somewhat random, the intent being (I assume) to point out the dangers of Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics.

Elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics is a dangerous sport.

That’s certain.

We suffer as many injuries as any other Olympic sport.

I didn’t learn anything from this database. It would be more balanced if they had an up-to-date response from each of the women included.

What would Courtney Kupets say about her entry, for example?

See the database for yourself.

Well I never did elite gymnastics but I did some rec stuff and was a cheerleader:

Injuries- Broken foot after jumping off a picnic table at age 12, tendinitis in the wrist that is bothered by simple things like typing, knee pain since the age of 15 that can make it hard to get up and down stairs, and back and hip pain that comes out of nowhere and makes it hard to sit, stand, or bend over.

I am not making light of these injuries but I did nothing and I hurt all the time too.

Some of those reports are pretty lame. Breaking stuff can happen doing anything. The multiple surgeries, though, those are pretty awful. One wonders if they could have been prevented – although when an elite athlete has that ONE goal in mind, they can be pretty hard to stop.
As for Woosley, that report was kinda lame.
