Girls Bars no longer break. Why can’t equipment companies invent a Ring that cannot be broken?
Inside Gymnastics has the sad details on exactly what went down after Illinois’ Tyler Williamson broke one of the rings during the Team Championships last night:
… “I’ve been doing NCAA meets for over 20 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Williams concluded. “Ultimately, I don’t want to take anything away from the winning team, yet I know we might have had a shot without that incident. Michigan was great two days in a row and maintained that momentum, even in the midst of all that. My hat is off to them for that.” …
In the end, 6 gymnasts “peeled” off during the competition. All 6 were offered a chance to repeat their Rings routines, taking the new score (better or worse).
Tyler Williamson insisted on his redo. But it was MIDNIGHT before he got to start. Yeesh.
…
“That was one of the top 10 strangest things I’ve ever seen,” Olympic gold medalist Bart Conner, who was calling the meet for ESPN, told Inside. …

Despite the disaster, Michigan truly did have the magic. Congratulations to the NCAA Champions.

Was/will it be televised? Love Bart’s commentary. Seems more masculine than Dagget.
One article said there would be “delayed TV coverage”.
Reading Legendre say that the rings were slippery is interesting. Seems like ANY gymnast who used the compromised equipment should have been allowed (required?) to redo his exercise. sheesh…what a mess. Since in a way, it’s unfair to get a second try for other errors and/or the effects of rest could be beneficial (or detrimental!)
The team finals will be shown on ESPN2 on 4/23, 1 30PM in I can’t remember what time zone.
Tyler Williamson, the Illini who was on the rings when they broke, made the SR event final. He finished second to Brandon Wynn, whom no one was going to beat anyway.
I just got back from watching the EFs – a lot of the gymnasts appeared to be exhausted from the 5 hour debacle of the night before.
There was no way to make this competition fair once trouble cascade started, so we are just going to have to accept the results.
Michigan certainly has a good enough team to win outright in a “normal” meet.
I agree there was no way to make it fair and think they just needed to do whatever was their best shot.
I like Golder talking about the magic potion. As a male gymnast, I’m so sick of hearing girls talk about how easy it is to win an NCAA title in my sport.
If they had another rings tower why didn’t they replace it right away? Why wait until event finals?
They replaced the tower right away. The trouble is that the new rings weren’t taking chalk, and people kept slipping.
i’m confussed arnt aai rings made of wood??
The article says they replaced the rings, not the tower.
