… starting to appear on YouTube, though it will be weeks before delayed coverage goes up on TV.
Click PLAY or watch Vanessa Zamarripa’s winning Vaults on YouTube.
Looks like she could easily add another twist to both those vaults. They’re so high and extended.
In College Finals the girls must show two different vaults, not necessarily from two different families. Yet they qualify to Finals with only one vault, a safety concern as kids (not Vanessa) “chuck” vaults they’ve hardly done all year. … Or compete vaults of less than 10.0 start value.
It was obvious to anyone who sat through 1hr 40min of Vault Finals on Saturday that the current scheme is a disaster.
I’d have gymnasts compete one vault in Finals, instead. But many people I talked to at Championships, including College coaches, preferred having kids that want to compete Finals, do two different vaults in team preliminaries. Mathematically, that would reduce the number of Finalists.
Update: College Gymnastics Board discussion – Let’s talk vault event finals – how do you fix it?
Aunt Joyce has commentary and links to more videos: Anna Li’s vault, Brittani McCullough’s winning Floor, Hollie Vise’s Floor, Courtney McCool’s Beam. AND Susan Jackson’s very difficult Beam routine to win Finals. Susan killed it, the most convincing win in Finals.

Having open difficulty (or some revised scale where much higher difficulty needed for a 10) would also narrow the field.
Just a nit: but I don’t think two roundoff entry vaults are different enough.
It’s not really a roundoff entry as she’s hitting the board going forwards.
Marcus: I know there is a twist AFTER the roundoff. Which is why it is considered “different”. My point is that it is not “that different”. I know the rules consider it different. I just don’t think they should. Vault has gotten MORE boring since the Yurchenko was allowed. Girls can’t even do handsprings any more. The event is totally round-off bastardized. I remember a time before that…
And it is STILL a roundoff even if they twist after.
And you are supposed to have me on ignore. I’m all evil and all. Permabanned becuase QLDiver (that hussy) falsely accused me of having two logins.
I agree- but seeing as how many of the girls threw a full twisting yurchenko and a plain layout yurchenko, not much we can nit pick about!
how bout to narrow the field, factor in season rankings instead of just prelim scores?
You can’t put people on ignore on blogs.
Having two different vaults is ridiculous, anyways. Not only do they only compete one the rest of the season and in qualifications for the final, not other apparatus requires two different routines. What exactly is the point of requiring it on vault??
I’m with you Kara.
One vault prelim. One vault Finals.
Limit the total number of competitor with a “tie break” procedure.
They must on all apparatus if live TV comes in next Championships.
