antibacterial gymnastics chalk?

I’m suspicious.

Magnesium carbonate is about as an inert substance as any.

Why add “five key essential oils and an additional natural drying agent“?

… Designed to inhibit bacteria, fungi and virus growth in the chalk and on weight lifting and gymnastics bars, PrimoChalk™ is the superior choice for health and safety conscious coaches and athletes. …

Oh dear – I’ve been involved in gymnastics since 1991 and have always used standard chalk… I’m yet to see a gymnast either catch a cold from the bar or complain that there are no essential oils in the chalk to sooth her skin :-)

gimme a break…..
“sanitary” chalk?
nonsense, ripoff….no one in the history of gymnastics has had a problem due to the infection properties of chalk……
anybody inexperienced or naive enough to believe this nonsense deserves to be separated from his/her dinero

Yeesh, my kid is allergic to essential oils, I think I’ll stick to regualr chalk. I think the obsession with antibacterials is enough to make us sicker!

Bacteria is good for us – stop sanitizing the world!

Anti-bacs are the reason why the newest generation have poor immune systems and are more susceptible to allergies I think. Bacteria won’t grow in gym-chalk alone anyway, they need more moisture and nutrients, thats why they grow in food/on skin etc. There is no need for this at all- just another paranoia

I prefer Grippy chalk from Italy. It lasts about 3 times as long as the regular stuff; I gave it to one of my gymnasts, and she still hasn’t asked for more! As for this “sanitary” chalk, it seems like the paranoid parents who struggle with the idea of spitting on grips may go buy it for their child’s personal use, but I see no reason for it.

Hi all,
I appreciate the feedback. First I would like to state that, this not a rip off and it is not non-sense. I agree, chalk is not going to harbor any sort of micro-organism on it’s own. As people dip and re-dip in the bowl, the chalk stops being clean and sterile. Bacteria that can make you very ill will stick around on bars, climbing walls, etc. I created this stuff out of concern for Staph. and MRSA infections which are indeed a problem in gyms. Perhaps gymnasts just that much cleaner and not one has ever had a Staph infection. Kudos.

I’m quite certain that, if you were afflicted with a staph infection in or on you body, you would come to understand that not all bacteria is “good for you”.

Further, the reason I chose to use essential oils and not an anti-bacterial chemical additive, as seen in most soaps, is that micro organisms do not seem to adapt to them.

The other benefits to the product were found after testing it. It does last longer, the grip is better, etc.

The drying agent just made the formula better and it was added after several iterations of creating and testing.

I’m not claiming that it’s as amazing as sliced bread. It is still just chalk. It’s just better than the usual stuff.

Thanks for reading and commenting.

Thanks Jeremy.

And new product is treated with a grain of salt, as you know.

You’ll need more of the top coaches to try and recommend it. I’ve been around a long time and have never heard of any medical problems from the old chalk. … And we rub it into raw wounds.

I can appreciate that. We have only just started informing gymnastics gyms and coaches and sending out samples for them to try. We’re awaiting feedback from them. As for CrossFit, weight lifting, etc the feedback has been great and focused on performance compared to block chalk. If anyone is interested in that, it’s here

So where’s the objective third party blind experiment that shows this product really is and does what it claims to?

An even if it is all good and true, it still seems redundant. We shouldn’t give micro organisms the chance to grow in chalk; we should be buying new chalk long before that! :D

You know, because we’ve used it all up… ;)
