Kytra Hunter – Floor – American Cup

Andy Thornton asks a good question: “… it seems like girls just don’t tumble like they used to. What happened to huge double layouts and full-in dismounts?”

It’s even more true on Vault. That apparatus has seen very little progress over the past 20yrs. Yet Men’s Vault and Floor tumbling are insane in 2010.

Kytra Hunter’s demo Floor at American Cup shows impressive tumbling.

In the past, powerful gymnasts could do 3 apparatus and get away with relatively easy Bars. (i.e. Romania)

Today, in my opinion, coaches must select gymnasts first for Bars and Beam. And try to develop tumbling and vault difficulty later. Nastia would be one prototype.

Love the big tumbling.

The COP for 2008 definitely favored bars, which was why Nastia did so well and some of the Chinese gymnasts.

I was trying to think of a few really good AA gymnasts that were truly good at all 4 events. I think Courtney Kupets was the best bars worker that could also tumble really well. Maybe Ashley Postell, but she kinda struggled on bars at times. Carly Patterson was decent on bars. Chellsie Memmel maybe? Hmmmm?

For her time, Shannon Miller was very proficient on 4 events. Once 1996 came around she was to injured to have upgraded anything on bars and she was capable of a DTY but Nunno pulled the plug on that one.

Hunter can tumble but her presentation is horrid.

Shannon couldn’t even grasp the bar without being in pain by 96. Blame that on Nunno over working her. Even when he tried to take time off for her USA-Gymnastics whined and forced her to go.
