Good video, those all the same drills I've used successfully with kids.

At a coaching clinic, I remember Brian McVey saying not to teach a front full using the barani, jump half-turn method like in the video. Unfortunately, he never said why.

Did Shawn do that?

Weird.

The rule is that all somersaulting twists should be the SAME direction.

Many successful gymnasts have twisted forward and backward somersaults in opposite directions. (Iarov hates that. And makes young gymnasts change to the same direction.)

I coached a male gymnast named Rhett Stinson who did forward twisting in two different directions. That's the only other gymnast I can recall doing it.

That's extreme barani confusion.

I've always wondered why Shawn Johnson competed her front layout 1/1 in one direction and front layout 1.5 in the opposite direction...

Would that be typical of barani confusion as well Rick?

That's very typical of "barani confusion", Kristin.

Most likely your backward twist direction was correct.

I was all kinds of confused when I would twist. Backwards I would go right, forward half I would go right, but forward full I would go left.
