It wasn't clear if this was just a Russian rule. It's highly likely she had no idea she was taking a banned substance. Some "supplements" have been found to contain prescription drugs the makers conveniently left off the label on the bottle. I would say there was no chance this was being used as a masking agent. If gymnasts were using steroids, even if most escaped undetected, in the 10 years of intensive drug testing following the Sydney Olympics, at least one would have been caught. This has not happened, which would lead an intelligent and rational person to conclude the problem was either nonexistent or vanishingly small. With them hosting the next Winter Olympics, and so many Russians being caught before the Vancouver Games, I wouldn't be surprised if they are cracking down with more severe rules.
