Yes. The FIG TRP TC have pushed great form very hard, rewarded big skills, and are now pushing big height to help round out the aesthetics a little more. You can see evidence of each aspect in COPs from various cycles.

Height is an important quality, I think. More time means more height.

It is the overall time that is added to execution and difficulty scores. Lasers for internationals, manual timing for national and lower (unless the country invests in the timing system). Lasers are currently used internationally for synchronisation scores. I haven't heard anything specific about differences in first 5/last 5 height - that would be difficulty to assign a deduction to, and is also currently dealt with by the execution panel.

The overall point the FIG is trying to push is great height in a routine. So yes, heavier athletes are at an advantage because physics means that they have more potential to achieve greater height. I'm not sure that will make too much of a difference at senior elite level though, as aesthetics are still important enough that we will have a balance of low body fat and high muscle ratio (the same we have currently). The girls all end up in a similar weight range as do the boys.

I think it's a great idea, and clubs would be smart to introduce a timing component to training now.

I'd heard a while ago that this was coming in but it was never made clear how it would work. There was talk about deductions if the second half of your routine was lower than the first half (well, lower time) and there were other things too but I don't remember exactly what.

When British Gymnastics rejigged their national grading structure for trampolining a couple of years ago they brought in a lot of timed jumping and timed routines... to complete logbooks you must be able to complete a routine oer a certain time.

I don't get it. Why is that important? Just for aesthetics?
