Olympic Men’s Figure Skating

Not a figure skating fan, I forced myself to watch the entire Short Program tonight. From what’s been called the strongest field in Olympic history, here’s the top 3, so far, if you missed it.

1. Evgeni Plushenko 90.85
2. Evan Lysacek 90.30
3. Daisuke Takahashi 90.25

Long Program goes Thursday, Feb. 18th at 8:00pm (ET).

Lysacek was good. I really liked Nobunari Oda, currently 4th.

And the NBC fluff piece on Plushenko was brilliant. The bad boy that everyone hates and fears.

World champion Evan Lysacek

I haven’t watched figure skating in ages. I hadn’t realized Plushenko had become a “bad boy”.

Remember the days when Canada had a great men’s program? Orser, Browning, Stojko – ah how I miss those days…

Seems it’s a persona he’s put on himself. The “bad Russian”. Great play on American TV.

In all fairness I didn’t watch the entire thing (I had a sinking feeling that Chan was going to be underwhelming and didn’t want to head to bed all irritated, ha) but from what I did catch, absolutely loved the guy who is sitting in third. That was quite a spirited performance!

I miss the days of Stojko and others. 1992-1995 was a cool time for figure skating. I remember it well. Looking at performances from the 80′s, I am reminded how like gymnastics the quality in general was at a peak.
